It is composed of 191 uninhabited islands, 85% of which are completely covered by ice. The island is named after the Austrian emperor (Franz Joseph I) who ruled from 1848 to his death in 1916, and is the only major Arctic scientific research target of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
