background

This area has long been a colony of Armenians, and it has always been part of Armenia historically and culturally. In response to this cultural difference, the Soviets classified it as an autonomous region of the Republic of Azerbaijan, so it sowed the seeds of current turmoil. With the continuous division of Soviet territory, the Armenians tried to incorporate the area into their nascent regime, which led to the War of Independence, similar toTransnistriaWar with other ethnic mixed areas around the former Soviet Union.

With the ceasefire in 1994 and the cessation of fighting, disputes moved from the theater to the diplomatic community (O.S.C.E. Minsk Group), Armenia and its supporter Russia, Azerbaijan and its supporter Turkey continued to clash in the region.

culture

During the conflict, the Azerbaijani population fled, and the region is culturally similar to Armenia. Armenia has complete border immigration procedures on the road to here. The investment and development of the region is maintained by the Armenians, which further strengthens the Armenian cultural bond.

The area is mainly rural and some small towns. Its charm lies in its historic Armenian ruins and medieval monasteries and their natural landscape. There are also people interested in visiting the disputed republic (even getting permission to visit destroyed towns near the frontline).
