Yingtan was originally a town under the jurisdiction of Guixi. It was established as a city in 1979 and was upgraded to a prefecture-level city in 1983. It governs Yuehu District,Guixi City、Yujiang County. The total area (including Guixi and Yujiang) is 3556.7 square kilometers, and the total population (including Guixi and Yujiang) is 1.338 million.

Yingtan is adjacent to Yiyang County and Qianshan County in the east, Dongxiang County in the west, Jinxi County and Zixi County in the south, Wannian County and Yugan County in the north, and Guangze County in Fujian Province in the southeast corner.

Yingtan City is located at the intersection of four main railway lines: Yingxia Line, Zhegan Line, Wangan Line and Shanghai-Kunming Line. It is known as the "city drawn by trains."

The Dragon and Tiger Mountain, depicted heavily in the opening chapter of "Water Margin", is located in Yingtan City and is now a World Natural Heritage and World Geopark Double Crown Scenic Area. Longhushan Scenic Area is unique among world-class scenic spots with its Taoist ancestral courtyard, Danxia landform and the combination of large cliff tombs in the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period.
