Çavuşin is a village in Cappadocia in the Turkey.

Today's village of Çavuşin lies at the foot of a collapsed rock wall, which gave way in 1963, tore down the largest and oldest church in Çavuşin (The Baptist Church) and brought death to several people.

getting there

Çavuşin is on the connecting road between Avanos and Goreme about 5km north of Göreme and cannot be missed. A bus that runs between these cities stops here every half hour.

Haçılı Kilise
  • Rock basilica of St. John. From this church from the 5th century AD. Unfortunately, not much has remained since 1963. A decorated column can still be seen. Although there is not much left of the church, it is worth climbing to enjoy the view.
  • Çavuşin Güvercinlik Kilisesi. Dovecote Church. In the northern part of the village, this church from the 11th century AD shows. inside well-preserved frescoes showing the archangels Michael and Gabriel, as well as the story of the New Testament in a beautiful series of pictures. The church is laid out without columns. Next to the church is an abandoned monastery with an associated grave.
  • Rose Valley. Güllüdere, mostly signposted with Rose Valley. The valley takes its name from the pink stones. Another church can be found here with the Ayvalı Kilise. There is also a passage to the Red Valley (see Ortahisar ) possible. The Haçılı Kilise, which is able to show a cross in the ceiling and extensive frescoes above the altar, is worth seeing. Opposite is the Flintstone Cafe in a tufa cave. Freshly squeezed fruit juices are available here in summer.
  • Paşabaği Valley. Here are some of the most frequently photographed tufa motifs. Among other things, the so-called triplets (tuff stones that split into three points at the top) or the local police headquarters, which is also located in the tuff stone. On the way from Çavuşin to Zelve one traverses it automatically.
  • Aktepe. This 1250 meter high mountain can be seen from afar. There are numerous valleys around it with good hiking opportunities.

Should you end up on a hike in the Rosental (Güllüdere, usually signposted Rose Valley), you should definitely stop by the Flint Stone Café. In this tufa cave, a fruit juice made from fresh fruit can be served on request. That doesn't sound very special. But if you have hiked there at over 30 °, the fruit juice, the shade and the pleasant atmosphere will seem like a paradise.
