THE'chizumulu island is an island in the lake Malawi landlocked in the territorial waters of Mozambique. It is the smaller of the two islands in Lake Malawi, the other being that of Likoma.

Understand

The two islands (Chizumulu and Likoma) lie only a few kilometers from Mozambique and are completely surrounded by the territorial waters of Mozambique, but belong to Malawi. They are therefore enclaves of Malawi. This is because the islands were colonized by Anglican missionaries from eastern Nyasaland, rather than the Portuguese who colonized Mozambique. The British originally claimed all of the waters of Lake Nyassa / Malawi, but in 1954 they signed an agreement with Portugal recognizing the center of the lake as the boundary between their holdings and making these islands an enclave.

The island consists of two large hills, with a flat area to the south. Cassava plantations cover much of the lower hill slopes and the upper parts are forested. There are many baobabs there.
