The Miyako Islands are located in the southwest of the prefecture ofOkinawa and Japan, and to 300 km east of north of Taiwan (but without transport to this country).

Understand

While the Miyako Islands are a major destination for Japanese tourists, they are far from the radar screens of international travelers. It is a good place for diving, there are excellent beaches and you can experience Okinawan cuisine and culture. These islands have truly embraced Okinawa's slow and relaxed lifestyle. In Miyako you can do everything from relaxing at Maehama beach, beach volleyball, golf, making your own shīsā (traditional lion-dog sculpture), listen to the sanshin (string instrument) or, if you are a big competitor, participate in the Strongman Triathlon in April.

To go

  • 1 Miyako Airport (IATA : MMY, 宮 古 空港 miyako kūkō) Logo indicating a wikipedia linkLogo indicating a link to the wikidata element – Miyako Island has a decent-sized airport for such a small connecting island that hosts daily flights from domestic destinations like Naha, Ishigaki, and more rarely Osaka and Tokyo on Honshū the main island of the country.

As of November 2008, there was no ferry service connecting outside the Miyako Islands.

Circulate

The main island, Miyako, only 159 km², but it is still quite important given that the main attractions of the island are on its outer edges. Cars, motorcycles and bicycles can be rented, and there are also regular buses and numerous taxis. Bridges connect Miyako to the islands of Iraqu and Kurema and a ferry goes to Irabu about every 30 min.

To speak

Japanese is the main language of the inhabitants, followed by the Miyako language and local dialects of every small town and island. If it is possible to find English speakers, it is rare.

Do

Maehama Beach in the southwest of Miyako Island is known to be one of the most beautiful in Japan. The white sand sands, its warm, turquoise and calm water and an excellent view of the island of Kurema are some of the reasons why it is one of the best places to soak up the sun. Beach volleyball is a great way to spend time at this excellent flat beach.

Housing

Security

While thefts do occasionally take place, it is not uncommon to see a businessman sleeping on the side of Nishizato Street with his head on his wallet. As long as travelers use common sense, they shouldn't have a problem here. On these islands, travelers are more at risk in their rental cars when people roll into traffic without warning than with anything else.
