The Prefecture of Evros is located at the northeastern tip of Greece, on the natural border of the country with Bulgaria to the north and Turkey in the East. To the west it borders the prefecture of Rodopi, which is accessed via the Egnatia Odos and to the south it is bathed by the Thracian Sea. Kilometers is the most remote prefecture from Athens as the capital of the prefecture, Alexandroupoli, is 840 km from it, 340 km from Thessaloniki, 295 km from Constantinople and 60 km from Komotini. It was named Prefecture of Evros by the homonymous river, the largest in the Balkans, which crosses the northeastern tip of Greece at the border. It is the natural border of Greece with its neighboring countries Turkey and Bulgaria.

Evros is a lowland prefecture as only 10.3% are mountainous areas, compared to the extensive plains that occupy 62.4% of its area, a large part of which is cultivated.
