History

THE Δομοκός took its name from the ancient city of Thaumakos which was built on the same site. According to the prevailing etymology, the name comes from the "wonderful" view of the place to the Thessalian plain that stretched in front of it. During the Middle Ages it flourished and was one of the cities that belonged to the wife of Emperor Alexios III, Empress Euphrosyne. After the occupation of Byzantium by the Franks and its distribution, Domokos came under the rule of the king of Thessaloniki Boniface. In 1493 Domokos was occupied by the Turks. He was liberated in 1881 but was re-occupied, temporarily, after a fierce battle on May 17, 1897, during the Greek-Turkish war of 1897. Initially, he joined the Prefecture of Larissa, as Domokos Province. However, with the Law BXDD of 1899 it was annexed to the Prefecture of Fthiotida and since then it is part of it and therefore of Central Greece.
