THE Ilia is her area Peloponnese with a population of 193,288 inhabitants (2001 census). The capital of the prefecture is Tower (33,791 inhabitants). The area has an area of 2,631 sq km, located in the northwest of the Peloponnese. It borders with Achaia to the north, the Arcadia to the east and Messinia at South.
At a glance
Historically, Ilia includes the territory of the ancient city-states of Pissa, Trifylia, Akroreia, and Ilidos. The territory of the prefecture is flat and mainly semi-mountainous, by 80%, with a few mountains to the east and south, such as Foloi where it is an extension of Erymanthos, Lapithas and Minthi.
The main rivers are Alfeios and Pinios which on the coastlines have created lagoons and important wetlands such as Strofilia and Caiaphas.
