THE Kissamos is a town in the prefecture of Chania, in the northwest Crete, in the homonymous Gulf, west of Chania, with a population of 4,236 inhabitants.

At a glance

The economic development of the region is based more on the wine it produces, the famous wine of Kissamos (main variety of the vine is the Roman one), the oil and the production of other agricultural products, as well as its tourist infrastructure. So the small town has become a busy tourist resort.

The ancient Kissamos, a coastal city on the northwest coast of Crete, has been located for several centuries in the plain that surrounds the homonymous bay. This ancient city was the port of ancient Polyrrinia, the oldest Doric city of Crete, 7 km south of Kissamos, a naval and commercial center of the region. After the Roman conquest of Crete (in 69 BC) Kissamos experienced great economic and residential development.

Due to its wealth and location, Kissamos was always well fortified. The city walls were first built by the Venetians (Good) and parts of them are still preserved, west of the Turkish fortress. In fact, it was named Kastelli because of its fortress: Kastelli or Kastelli Kissamos (to stand out, as Crete had many Kastellias).
