The Archaeological site of Kynos in Livanates
  • Kynos (archeological site). archaeological site in which, after excavations, ruins of the homonymous ancient settlement of Opountia Lokrida were found. This long-standing use of the space is one of the most interesting and subversive parameters of the excavation of Kynos as it is one of the rare cases of settlement with continuous use until modern times. It is located in one of the most seismically active areas of Greece since it falls within the radius of action of the well-known Atalanta fault that has given rise to many catastrophic earthquakes in the past, some of which are known to us from the ancient Greek literature. After each earthquake, the inhabitants did not leave the area but leveled the ruins and built new ones above them. Whenever some parts of the buildings were repairable, they used them, completing them, where necessary, in order to achieve a new useful building. This practice after a seismic episode of the middle of the 12th century BC is clearly reflected in the preserved buildings of the excavation that the visitor can see today. According to the above, the best preserved residential phases in Kynos belong to the Late Helladic IIIGD. Period as well as in the transitional period to the Early Iron Age, otherwise known as the Sub-Mycenaean, periods that cover the period from around the middle of the 12th c. BC until the middle of the 11th c. BC Residential and craft complexes were developed here, a fact that is confirmed by the movable findings of the excavation. Two kilns, one ceramic and one metallurgical, partially preserved, as well as a large number of slags and shells of unfortunate burning vessels, indicate that the inhabitants of the settlement were active in the production of ceramic objects and metallurgy during the 12th century. e.g.
