The Maribor is its second largest city in population Slovenia with 117,546 inhabitants in 2019 and was declared the European Capital of Culture for the year 2012.

The official language of the country is Slovenian and is spoken by 90% of the population. In the west of the country the Italian language is widespread, in the northern part the German language and in the east the Hungarian language. The Slovene language is 30% similar to the Serbo-Croatian language and most Slovenes (especially older ones) can communicate in Serbo-Croatian. Almost all of Slovenia speaks at least one foreign language, mainly German, English and Italian. English is the preferred language of young people.

Ideal period of visit

Maribor, like the rest of Slovenia, is a region with high levels of rainfall and snowfall. Rainfall is quite frequent in the period from April to July. Maribor is characterized by a typical continental climate. In spring the temperature rises sharply and in summer the temperatures reach and exceed 30 degrees with an average temperature of 20 degrees. In autumn the temperature drops sharply while in winter, the temperature drops significantly. The average temperature in winter is about 2 degrees below zero.

The international Airport Maribor is located about 10 km from the city and welcomes a significant number of charter flights. Alternatively there are several flights to Ljubljana, Graz and Zagreb. THE Adria airways offers a significant number of flights each week from Thessaloniki to Ljubljana.

The city is connected by rail with the Ljubljana, the Copper, the Zagreb, τη Rijeka, the Graz and Vienna. The neighboring town of Pragersko is 26 km from Maribor and provides a railway connection to Venice and Budapest. The A1 (E 57) motorway crosses the city to the east and connects it with Graz, Austria to the north and Ljubljana to the southeast. Access to the city is very easy and there is excellent signage. Maribor is 129 km from Ljubljana, 69 km from Graz, 116 km from Zagreb, 220 km from Trieste and 370 km from Venice. There is every day bus connection of Trieste with Maribor (via Ljubljana).

Its port Trieste in Italy is the ideal choice. The city is 223 km from Maribor and since the beginning of 2013, the Italian city has a direct ferry connection, three times a week, with Igoumenitsa and Patras, through the Minoan lines.

What to see

  •   The castle. The construction of Maribor Castle began in 1478 and was completed in 1483 by Emperor Frederick, who wanted to fortify the north-eastern part of the city. The castle, along with the cathedral, is one of the most remarkable monuments in Maribor. Today the castle houses the Maribor Museum (Pokrajinski muzej). Important architectural elements of the castle are the main staircase, Baroque style, 1747-1759, the Lutheran chapel along the south façade, which was built in 1665-1675 and the Hall of the Knights on the first floor.
  •   Cathedral (mariborska stolnica). - In the center of Maribor, in Slomškov Square is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (sv.Janez Krstnik). The church, from an architectural point of view, is a three-aisled basilica. The exterior of the church is characterized by different architectural types but the Gothic style dominates. To the north, from the main entrance of the temple, is one of the best preserved columns of the late Gothic period. In front of the temple there is a fountain with embossed decoration. The cathedral is functioning normally and the entrance is free.
  •   The TOWN HALL (Mariborski rotovž), Glavni Square trg. - Located in the northern part of the central square of Maribor (Glavni trg). In front of the town hall there is a semicircular gate and a corridor leads to an inner courtyard. Above the gate there is a Venetian-style balcony. The town hall was built in 1515. It is worth visiting the entire central square and observing the "plague column" (an exact copy of the original work of 1743) and the Jesuit college with the church of St. Alojzij (sv. Alojzij).
  •   The old vine (Stara trta). - On the banks of the river Drava, in the area of ​​Lent is the oldest vine in the world, which was included in the Guinness Book of Records and is estimated to be over 400 years old.
  • The Maribor Environmental Park. To the east of the town, along the Drava River, is the environmental park, which includes the old Drava riverbed and is a protected area under Slovenian law due to its rare flora and fauna.

Events

  • Lent Festiva. - International multicultural festival with many musical and theatrical events. It takes place in the last week of June and usually lasts 14 days.
  • Old Vine festival. - Wine and local cuisine festival. It is the biggest tourist event of autumn and is combined with many cultural events.
  • [International puppetry festival. - Famous festival throughout Slovenia and abroad. It takes place in August.
  • Borštnik festival. - Theatrical festival, in the second half of October.
