At a glance
The area was built very soon between 1980 - 1995. A large hotel and many smaller ones have been built in the area. Many rooms and apartments are also available in summer. The population is about 1200 inhabitants who come mainly from the villages of Agios Stefanos and Pefki. At the edge of the sea lies a shallow and sandy beach, with waters that are very warm even in late October. At the edge of this beach is the small port. Other smaller beaches are Kalamokania, Lagoufa, Diaskari and Lagada.
Excavations in the area of Makry Gialos have brought to light a Minoan villa as well as a villa of the Roman period.
How to get there
O Makry Gialos away from Ierapetra 24 km, from Sitia 35 km, from Saint Nicholas 60 km and from Heraklion 123 km
To come here one can travel by boat to the ports of Sitia, Ag. Nikolaou or Heraklion. Also by air from Sitia airport and Heraklion airport. The area is also served by regular bus services.

In summer the tourist offices organize excursions to the archeological and nature-loving parts of Crete (Knossos, Museums, Samaria, Vai etc.), as well as to smaller islands (Chrissi, Spinalonga).
