THE Mytilene is a city built on the southeastern tip of the island Lesvos. It is the capital of the island, seat of the prefecture of Lesvos and the region of North Aegean, administrative, commercial and spiritual center with a population of 27,247 inhabitants (2001 census).

By boat
The port of the city, which is one of the largest in the Aegean, has daily ferry service to its port Piraeus via Chios and ferry transport with Thessaloniki, τη Lemnos but also Kavala. It is also connected by itineraries with small ships with the cities Ayvalik and Deciles on the opposite Turkish coast.
