The Πλομάρι is its first most populous town Lesvos [2,996 k. (2011)] after the city of Mytilene.

At a glance

It is located on the south coast of the island and is considered a traditional settlement. It was built in its current location around 1842, when the fear of pirates disappeared and is crossed by the torrent Seduda. In the center of the settlement is the church of Agios Nikolaos built in 1847. A trademark of the settlement is the plane tree of the central square, which is said to have been planted in 1813.

Plomari is highly used for tourism, with many hotel complexes, shops, taverns, cafes and shops with tourist items.

The other mountain villages of Plomari Province are also of great interest. "Ta Plomaritochoria", as they are known, are picturesque settlements built on the slopes of Mount Olympus, among the pines. Paleochori, Neochori, Plagia, Trigonas, Akrasi and Ampeliko offer the visitor a world of peace and natural beauty.

What to see

  • Multicenter. The core of the cultural life of the city is the "Polycentro", an old soap factory that houses a hall for events, conferences, permanent and periodic exhibitions. The Polycentre is named "Benjamin the Lesbian", in honor of the great Teacher of the Nation, who was born in Megalochori in the province of Plomari. There is also a "Soap Museum", in the Center of the Municipality (the renovated and remodeled former soap factory Poulia), where all the tools of the product are exhibited, labels from various brands of lesbian soaps, as well as the commercial correspondence of the owners of the soap . Finally, in the same area there is a permanent exhibition of photographic material for the vessels of Plomari, since the area had a remarkable merchant fleet, with which the shipowners of Plomari plowed the Aegean and the Mediterranean and reached the Black Sea.
  • Ouzo Museum. In Plomari there is an "Ouzo Museum" (on the premises of the Varvagianni distillery), where the visitor can see old distilleries and other tools of the way the product is produced, as well as documents indicating the ways of marketing and the markets in which it was exported.

Entertainment

The beaches of the area are very popular. Among them are Agios Isidoros, Ammoudeli and the neighboring Melinda. The beach of Agios Isidoros Plomari is located just outside the village and is one of the largest and cleanest beaches on Lesvos. With its fine gravel, the organized beach and the guarantee of the Blue Flag, it is the ideal choice for bathers. The beaches of Melinda, Ammoudeli, Agia Varvara and Drota also stand out in the area. In recent years, a small marina with a capacity of 60 boats has been operating in Plomari.

Every summer, a number of cultural events take place, the most important being the "Ouzo Festival" during the Nautical Week and the "Benjaminia". Ten kilometers north is Megalochori, the old Plomari, home of the wise Benjamin of Lesvia.
