The city developed both culturally and commercially, becoming a travel destination. In addition to being an administrative center, it is home to numerous educational, economic, agricultural, cultural, technological and social institutions and organizations. Its architecture is mostly modern, with new high-rise skyscrapers, but the Al-Dira apartment, the core of the old town, has been rebuilt in a style reminiscent of Nejad's old brick and mud buildings before 1900.

It is one of the greenest areas in the city, with lush gardens and several sports centers. In particular, it is known for its excellent architecture, thanks to which it is considered a model for Islamic cities around the world. Despite its character and name, the Diplomatic Area has no special legal status or privileges: all the laws of Saudi Arabia apply there in full force, and patrols are also carried out by the Mutaween, the Saudi religious police.

The center of Riyadh, Al Bathaa and Al Dira, is also the oldest part. In the heart of the 19th century Masmak Fortress, one of the most important sights in the city.
