Generally

THE Σπερχειάδα is located 35 kilometers west of Lamia, while it is the largest city in population of Western Fthiotida, with a population of 2,691 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census.

THE Makrakomi is a town, located about 31 kilometers west of Lamia, near the river Sperchios and at an altitude of about 250 meters. Its population in 2011 amounted to 2,245 inhabitants. She is known for her carnival events. Until 1916 it was called Varybopi, when it was renamed Makrakomi

THE Long is located 28 km west of Lamia and 2 km east of Makrakomi, on the National Road Lamia-Karpenisi-Agrinio. Its population is 307 inhabitants according to the 2011 census. The settlement is located close to the plane tree forest of the Sperchios river, while the only animal-friendly station in Fthiotida has been created in the village. Its main action is the rescue and treatment of injured animals and birds. Pistachio in shell has been widely cultivated in Makri since the early 1950s. Until 1927 it was called Makrisi, a year which was renamed Makri.

H Paleovracha is a semi-mountainous village, it is built at the foot of Mount Goulina, towards the valley of Sperchios and at an altitude of 440 meters. It is 35km from Lamia, 7km from Makrakomi and 5km from Sperchiada. The population of the village amounts to 419, according to the 2011 Census.

History

Sperchiada was built towards the end of the Turkish occupation and after the fall of Souli by Ali Pasha. Its original name was Aga, a name that came from the seat of the master of the area, Turk Aga, but in 1904 the town was named Sperchiada from the river of the same name, Sperchios.
