Stylida

History

Known since antiquity as "Falara", it extends a little more than half a kilometer into the current sea of the Gulf of Malia. Ruins of the two distant castles are located at "Agia Aikaterini" (west) and "Kalogeros" (east) respectively. The underwater construction of the port of Stylida in the last century completely destroyed the eastern castle, leaving the wreckage of the base of the wall in the place "Nisaki" where they are visible even today. It is speculated that Falara did not develop as a settlement until the Roman occupation and later. Much later, Stylida became known as the northernmost city before the Ottoman Empire, when the first Greek state was first recognized and demarcated. Due to its strategic importance, Stylida was a critical station of the first railway network, probably because Stylida then defined the eastern (and only passable) passage in northern Greece.
