Shanxi Province, named for its location to the west of Taihang Mountain, is located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau. The Yellow River, Haihe River and Fen River flow through Shanxi, and its magnificent scenery is enhanced by the famous Taihang Mountains, Lvliang Mountains, Hengshan and Wutai Mountains. Most parts of the province are above 1,000 meters above sea level.

Shanxi is a major birthplace of Chinese civilization, and its long history can be traced back to ancient times. In ancient times, the southwestern part of Shanxi was the territory of three leaders. The three leaders were Yao (capital: Pingyang, today Linfen), Shun (capital: Puban, today Yongji), and Yu (capital: Anyi, Jinxia County) .

Language

Shanxi’s dialects are mainly Jin dialects. The dialects of southwestern Shanxi (including Linfen and Yuncheng) are the Central Plains Mandarin Fenhe dialect. However, the dialects of Fenhe dialects are very different from other Mandarins due to their rich literary and colloquial pronunciations, so they are also very difficult to understand.

In Shanxi's larger cities (such as Taiyuan, Datong, Changzhi, Yangquan, etc.), most residents can speak Mandarin fluently.

arrival

Travel around

The main stations in Shanxi are all around the main provincial highway (an impressive modern toll road running from Datong in the north to Yuncheng in the south). This highway passes through or is close to major tourist centers such as Taiyuan (the provincial capital), Pingyao, and Linfen. Therefore, it is very convenient to visit key tourist attractions in Shanxi Province by car (the main exception is Wutai Mountain, which can be reached by car, but is not close to this main highway). Unfortunately, renting or driving a car in Shanxi is not so easy, especially for a non-Chinese speaker. Through a travel agency is the best arrangement.

There is also a railway in Shanxi running in the same direction as this highway, which will stop in major cities. This is a great way to get from city to city, although you need to check the schedule carefully, as some cities rarely arrive.

The main airports are in Taiyuan and Datong.

Shanxi has some local long-distance lines. Usually the bus can reach the destination faster than the train.

Taxis are freely available for local travel and daily hire.
