Abkhazia (Abkhaz: Аҧсны (Apsny), Georgian: აფხაზეთი (Apkhazeti)) is a territory of disputed status on the Black Sea and in the western Caucasus of sukhum as capital. According to much of the international community, it is an autonomous republic within the territory of the state Georgia. However, according to its own and some other countries, Abkhazia is an independent state. In practice, the country has been independent since at least 1993, although that independence is not recognized by most states. Russia, which had long stationed troops in Abkhazia, recognized Abkhazia's independence on 26 August 2008 following the war in South Ossetia.
