Georgia is a country full of great history and unparalleled natural beauty. Archaeologists have discovered that wine was already being produced in Georgia between about 7000 - 5000 BC. Fortunately, lately more and more is known about this beautiful country between the Black and Caspian Seas.
Georgians are not Russians, Turks or Greeks, nor do they have a clear ethno-linguistic connection to other peoples in the Caucasus. Because the Georgians have one of the oldest literary traditions in the world, it is known that they have lived here for many thousands of years. There are theories linking the Georgians to other ancient European peoples such as the Basques and the Corsicans, but these are not widely believed. Within the Georgians there are some minorities: the Svanets in the north, Mingrelians in the west and the Islamic Lazen in the south-west and in Turkey. Each of these groups has their own dialect of Kartvelian (Georgian), which is not fully mutually intelligible. Minority groups in the country include Azerbaijanis in the east, Armenians in the south, and Pontic Greeks (sometimes called Urum in Georgia) in the southwest. The different ethnic groups that now live in Georgia all feel very connected and proud of their language, origin, history and their country. Given its location, you can imagine that the country has been involved in conflicts over thousands of years by Roman, Byzantine, Mongol, Persian, Ottoman and Russian rulers. And hundreds of times battle was fought here, and towns and villages were destroyed and rebuilt. The country is full of fortresses, castles, walled towns with old churches (including the oldest in Christian history) and monasteries.
Christianity was introduced to Georgia in the first century and in the fourth century it became the second country, after Armenia, to officially establish Christianity as a state religion with the Gospel of St. Nino of Cabdoccia.
Located next to the Persian Empire and under the influence of numerous Islamic rites and customs, Georgia has developed a unique religious culture of its own.
At the time of Russian rule, Georgia was the "Riviera" of the USSR and was known for its food and wine. The Russians may love vodka, but the Georgian wine was a favorite of the Russian elite. Thanks to the subtropical climate near the Black Sea coasts, Georgia has been able and able to produce good fruit tea, wine, grapes and lemons. But this also means that there are beautiful beaches at the foot of the mountains where you can relax and take a day trip along the medieval sights.
Georgian cuisine is often a source of pride for Georgians. The most common dish is chatshapuri, a flat bread filled with cheese, of which many (regional) variants exist. The chatchapuri can be eaten in restaurants, but can also be bought as a snack in street stalls. Being another common dish chinkalis, dough dumplings filled with meat. Furthermore, many different dishes are prepared from lamb, chicken, beef or turkey.

Safety
It is not recommended to go to the areas Abkhazia and South Ossetia to travel. These areas are a conflict between Russia and Georgia. By following certain routes in these areas you can be caught by the Georgian army and sentenced to prison. This also applies to tourists. Also ask the Ministry of BuZa and/or your travel agency for information and advice.
