South America was discovered at the end of the fifteenth century by Spanish and Portuguese explorers. Spanish and Portuguese are therefore the most widely spoken languages on the continent. There are many tropical rainforests, beautiful sandy beaches and desert areas on the continent. The west of the continent is dominated by the Andes. The extreme south of the continent is near the Antarctic Circle. The Amazon River flows through the continent and is by far the most water-rich river in the world.

Info

Nature and climate

South America is very diverse in nature. The north is around the equator, the south is near Antarctica. The climate is also influenced by two other major factors. The highlands andNorthern Andes along the west coast protect the continent from the cold and wet influence of the Pacific Ocean. The Amazon River originates in the lee of the mountains, one of the largest rivers in the world. The vast Amazon rainforest grows on both sides of this and, together with the warm influences from the Atlantic Ocean, largely creates its own climate that you learn to predict yourself after a few days. For example, almost every day at 4:00 PM rain falls in Manaus around the rainy season. Due to the high humidity in the Amazon you would do well to adopt the pace of life of the local population.

Arrive

Passport and visa

In most countries of South America, holders of a Dutch passport do not need to apply for a visa. The same probably applies to a Belgian passport. Stay up to 90 days is free in most countries. Please note that you will receive a stamp in your passport upon entry and departure. Sometimes customs is 20 km before the border.

Exception:

  • Bolivia: at the border, maximum 30 days
  • Suriname: 30 US$ for a tourist visa of 1 or 2 months, to be applied for at the Surinamese embassy, exception: Dutch nationals living in the Netherlands, older than 60 years.

Language

Most of the countries in South America are Spanish speaking. There are, however, a few important exceptions, the most notable of which applies to Brazil. This is because there is a special form of the Portuguese. A second important exception is the Guyanas, on the northern coast of the continent. People speak English in Guyana, Dutch in Suriname and French in French Guyana.
