Spanish (Spanish: espanol) or Castilian (Spanish: castellano) is a Romance language and is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Spanish is the mother tongue for 329 million people, while another 170 million speak Spanish as a second language. The historical origin of the language lies in Spain but most speakers nowadays can be found in Central- and South America.
Grammar
Nouns and adjectives
In Spanish, just like in the other Romance languages, the nouns have a masculine or feminine gender. Spanish has no neuter words, but it does have words that are both masculine and feminine.
Noun and definite article
| singular | plural |
---|---|---|
male | elamiO | loose amios |
female | laamia | readamiash |
Noun and indefinite article
| singular | plural |
---|---|---|
male | unamiO | unos amios |
female | unaamia | unasamiash |
- Adjectives adapt to the noun. These always come after the noun, unless the verb . is in the sentence ser or estar is, then the adjective comes after ser or estar. For example: Una casa bonita, unos bolígrafos rojos, la casa es pequena.
The gender of the nouns is determined by the ending of the word:
Masculine Nouns
| Exit | Example | Exception |
---|---|---|---|
-O | El telefono | La photo | |
consonant | El hotel | la imagen | |
-aje | El garaje | - | |
-or | el amor | - | |
-grandmother | El idioma | - | |
-ema | El sistema | la crema |
Feminine nouns
| Exit | Example | Exception |
---|---|---|---|
-a | la casa | El dia | |
-ción | La información | - | |
-tad | la libertad | - | |
-dad | la university | - |
- Nouns that are both masculine and feminine have the ending -e: La gente & el estudiante/la estudiante.
- If a noun ends in -z in the singular, the -z in the plural changes to -ces: prez --> preces.
- If a word in the singular ends with an accent in the last syllable, this word in the plural loses the accent: la estaciOn --> las estaciOnes.
verbs
Regular verbs
Regular verbs in Spanish end with -ar, -er or -irThe conjugation then goes like this:
Presente (present tense)
Personal pronoun | -AR | -ER | -IR
|
yo | hablO | comO | liveO |
tú | hablash | comes | livees |
él/ella/usted | habla | come | livee |
nosotros/nosotras | hablamos | comemos | liveimos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | hablan | comand | liveand |
Infinitivo | hablar | comer | vivir |
- The personal pronouns are not required to use as subject in a sentence. hablo already means 'I am talking', at yo hablo an emphasis is placed on 'I' here. This applies to all tenses and forms of the verbs.
Imperfecto (simple past tense)
Personal pronoun | -AR | -ER | -IR
|
yo | hablaba | comia | liveia |
tú | hablabas | comias | liveias |
él/ella/usted | hablaba | comia | liveia |
nosotros/nosotras | hablabamos | comíamos | liveíamos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | hablaban | comian | liveian |
- The endings of the verbs ending in -er and -ir are equal to each other in the imperfecto.
- At the first vowel of the ending in the imperfecto, the verbs on -er and -ir are accented.
Perfecto (Present Perfect)
The present perfect tense in Spanish is formed by the (irregular) auxiliary verb haber. Here is the conjugation of haber:
Personal pronoun | Haber
|
yo | Hey |
tú | has |
él/ella/usted | ha |
nosotros/nosotras | hemos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | han |
The past participle can be formed in Spanish with regular verbs in two ways:
- Verbs with -AR, the ending comes at the stem -ado. Hablar --> habl- --> hablado.
- Verbs with -ER or -IR, the ending comes on the stem -ido. Comer --> com- --> comido & Vivir --> viv- --> vivido.
Irregular verbs
Spanish also has irregular verbs, such as ser, estar, tener and ir. Below is the conjugation of these verbs.
Personal pronoun | Are | Are
|
yo | soy | estoy |
tú | eres | estás |
él/ella/usted | es | está |
nosotros/nosotras | somos | estamos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | son | están |
Infinitivo | ser | estar |
- The verbs ser and estar mean the same thing but are used in a different way:
- Ser is used as 'to be, as soon as something is so for a long time. For example in characteristics, appearance, kinship and nationality.
- Estar is also used as 'being', but as soon as something is temporary or not long-lasting. For example, when being in a place.
- Note the accents on ser and estar, ser has no accents in the presente and estar has an accent on all forms except the 1st person and the infinitive.
Personal pronoun | To have
|
yo | tengo |
tú | teens |
él/ella/usted | ten |
nosotros/nosotras | tenemos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | tens |
Infinitivo | tener |
- With age you use the verb in Spanish tener, so in Spanish they say 'I have 30 years' (Tengotreinta años).
- Also tener has no accents in the conjugation of the presente.
Personal pronoun | To go
|
yo | voy |
tú | vas |
él/ella/usted | va |
nosotros/nosotras | vamos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | by |
Infinitivo | ir |
- The verb to go can also be used reflexively, so irse is then used.
- Also no accents in the presente of the conjugation of ir.
Reflexive verbs
Reflexive verbs in Spanish end with -se, -se comes after the ending of the verb. That then looks like: -arse, -erse or -irseExamples of reflexive verbs are: Llamarse (to be called) and Aburrirse (to be bored). A reflexive verb is normally conjugated, but then a reflexive pronoun comes before the conjugated verb. The reflexive pronouns are:
Personal pronoun | reflexive pronoun | example -AR | Example -IR
|
yo | me | me llamo | me aburro |
tú | at | to llamas | too aburres |
él/ella/usted | se | se llama | se aburre |
nosotros/nosotras | nos | nos llamamos | nos aburrimos |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | se | se llaman | se aburren |
- Look out, Llamarse means to call, but llamar means to call. So pay attention to the conjugation of the reflexive pronoun.
Gustar and encantar
The verbs gustar (Like/Love) and encantar (Love/Love) are not regularly conjugated. These verbs adapt to the next noun or verb in the sentence. There are only two forms of these verbs, namely Gusta, Gustan and encanta, encantan. If the next word in the sentence is a noun singular or a verb, the verb is gustar or encantar used as Gusta or encanta. But if the next word in the sentence is a plural noun, or if there are several singular nouns, then gustar or encantar used as Gustan or encantan. And to indicate the subject there are additional personal pronouns here, below are these personal pronouns:
Personal pronoun | personal pronoun gustar and encantar | Example gustar | Emphatically with gustar
|
yo | me | me gusta(n) | a mí me gusta(n) |
tú | at | to gusta(n) | a ti te gusta(n) |
él/ella/usted | le | le gusta(n) | a él/ella/usted le gusta(n) |
nosotros/nosotras | nos | nos gusta(n) | a nosotros/nosotras nos gusta(n) |
ellos/ellas/ustedes | lesson | lesson gusta(n) | a ellos/ellas/ustedes les gusta(n) |
- As stated above, the emphasis is also different with these verbs than with regular verbs. The emphasis here is formed by: A personal pronoun. The exception of personal pronouns are yo, which becomes mí (with accent), and tú, which becomes ti (without accent).
- Examples with Gustar and Encantar:
- Me gustan las playas. (I like the beaches) After gustar comes a noun plural.
- Te gusta la playa. (You love the beach) After gustar comes a noun singular.
- Le gusta jugar con la consola. (He/she/you likes gaming) After gustar comes a verb.
- Nos gusta cantar y bailar. (We like to sing and dance) Verbs come after gustar, but it remains gusta
- Austedes les gusta mi familia. (They like my family) Emphasis is placed on ustedes, after gustar comes a noun singular.
