Info
Language
Although you might not expect it, the British Isles have a great diversity of languages. Of course, English is spoken on all islands, and fluently almost everywhere. But there are also many regional languages and dialects. These usually belong to the group of Celtic languages, which includes Irish in Ireland, Scottish Gaelic in Scotland, Welsh in Wales, Manx Gaelic in the Isle of Man and Cornish in Cornwall. In addition, a number of languages are related to English, such as Lowland Scots.
There are also great differences within the use of English, and some dialects can be difficult for the untrained listener to understand. For example, there is a big difference between the dialects in the north of England compared to the south.
Arrive
Aeroplane
There are scheduled flights from mainland Europe to numerous destinations in Great Britain and Ireland. Major airports are: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester and Liverpool. In Scotland they are Edinburgh and Glasgow. Dublin is the main airport in Ireland. See per city in the relevant articles for the connection by plane.
Flies from Schiphol KLM direct to the following UK destinations: London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Hull/Humberside, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Norwich and Teesside.
Air France subsidiary Regional Jet flies very frequently from Amsterdam Schiphol to London City Airport on working days.
From Schiphol, British Airways flies to London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester.
From Rotterdam, VLM flies to London City Airport.
Easyjet flies from Schiphol to various destinations in Great Britain, including London Luton, London Stanstead and Glasgow.
Dublin Airport is served from Amsterdam by KLM and Aer Lingus. Ryan Air provides connections to Ireland from various smaller (regional) airports.
Train
Since the opening of the Eurotunnel and the HSL Brussels-Lille, the Eurostar runs regularly from Brussels South to London Kings Cross station. The Eurostar also runs between Paris Nord and London Kings Cross via Lille Europe. The other islands are not accessible by train. However, there are some trains on the island of Ireland, including between the two capitals Dublin and Belfast.
Car
Since England is still an island despite the opening of the channel tunnel, you are forced to have your car transported by ferry either with "Le Shuttle" on the train across the Channel or the North Sea.
In England you drive on the left. There are regular signs at the popular arrival points to remind motorists of this. What is also good to know is that the maximum speeds also differ compared to the Netherlands.
- 30 m/h (48 km/h) in built-up areas
- 70 m/h (112 km/h) on the highway/motorway
- 60 m/h (96 km/h) on other roads
Boat
There are still various ferry services to Great Britain from the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
Main lines:
- IJmuiden - Newcastle (the most ideal connection for Scotland)
- Hoek van Holland - Harwich
- Europort - Hull shipping company P&O Ferries [1], night boat
- Zeebrugge - Dover
- Ostend - Ramsgate
- Dunkirk - Dover
- Calais - Dover/Folkestone.
Be careful when bringing pets! Not all airlines are licensed to bring pets.
There are also boat connections between Ireland and England (Liverpool), Wales (Cardiff) and Scotland. Ireland also has a direct boat connection to Brittany in France.
Travel around
Car
A lot of use is made of roundabouts, the so-called "round abouts". Even at very small intersections a "dot" has been made in the middle, so that they also function as a roundabout. The following also applies here: traffic on the roundabout has priority.
