To know
Geographical notes
Built on the confluence of the river Broken (from which it takes its name, lit .: dam on the Rotte) and the Nieuwe Maas river, is divided into two parts by the latter: Rotterdam-Noord is Rotterdam-Zuid. The city has the largest port inEurope.
Rotterdam, Amsterdam, The Hague and several smaller cities in the western part of the nation are expanding towards each other to the point that the whole area is sometimes referred to as a single metropolis known as Randstad.
Background
In 1150 the area was hit by violent floods that caused a drastic depopulation, so dams and embankments were built to defend the few lands that emerged. In 1260 it was built on the river Broken, in the current Hoogstraat, a dam. The Rotterdamse Schie, a navigable canal, was completed in 1360, this event actually opened trade with the cities ofHolland of the north, of the Germany andEngland.
Over time the port of Rotterdam became one of the most important in the country and was one of the six founding members of the Dutch East India Company.
On May 14, 1940, five days after the invasion of Germany in the Netherlands, Rotterdam was bombed by the Luftwaffe. The heart of the city was almost completely destroyed. Between the 1950s and 1970s the city was rebuilt. Beginning in 1980, the city council decided to revolutionize Rotterdam's urban planning, building new and bold style condominiums, office buildings and leisure centers making the city center more liveable and with a new skyline.
How to orient yourself
The Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse), a channel of the Rhine delta, crosses the city with its sinuous course, forming the island of Noordereiland in the center (northern island). On the right (or northern) bank is the historic center while the Kop van Zuid district extends on the southern bank. The two banks are connected by numerous railway and road bridges and tunnels. The 'De Hef' is a steel structure, the remnant of a railway bridge built in 1877 and fallen into disuse since 1993, when a railway tunnel was opened to traffic. Today the de Hef with its 60 m high constitutes a sort of city monument. Further west is the Erasmusbrug, a modern bridge completed in 1996 to a design by architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos. It is an 800m long bridge supported by a single 139m high pillar. nicknamed "the swan" for its asymmetrical shape. The bridge has a mobile section to allow the passage of boats that go up the Rhine. The Erasmusbrug was the backdrop to some scenes of the director's film "Who Am I" Jackie Chan. In 2005, planes passed under the bridge during championship races Red Bull Air Race.
Kop van Zuid ("southern head") was a working-class neighborhood where port facilities were located. After their dismantling, the area was transformed into a residential neighborhood with avant-garde characteristics. The best Dutch architects, including Teun Koolhaas died in 2007.
Wilhelminapier is the pier on the southern bank next to the Erasmusbrug. There is the cruise ship terminal. Next to it is the "World Port Center", an 80 m tower where the port authority that monitors traffic on the river is based. The tower was completed in 1997 to a design by Sir Norman Foster. Wilhelminapier has retained some old buildings which give it a romantic touch. One of these housed the headquarters of the "Holland America Line" shipping company. Today it is used as a 4-star hotel, the New York Hotel with a large restaurant and an equally large bar, both always very crowded. The Luxor Theater, a city institution that once stood in the old center, has also been moved to Wilhelminapier. The new building was completed in 1996 to a design by Australian architect Peter Wilson. Its hall has a capacity of 1,500 seats. Montevideo is a 43-storey skyscraper that with its 140 m. was the highest of the Netherlands until the completion of the Delftse Poort skyscraper, also in Rotterdam. Montevideo is surmounted by an M-shaped structure thanks to which it reaches a total height of 152 m., Which would contribute to maintaining its primacy for just one meter. It was completed in 2005 on a project by the Mecanoo studio based in Delft. The work has received numerous international awards. It is a luxury condominium with 192 apartments.
Passing on the other bank in correspondence of the old center, the complex is known Kubuswoning (cube houses), a residential neighborhood with avant-garde houses completed in 1984 by Dutch architect Piet Blom. Parkhaven Tower
Chinatown it is further north. It extends on the Kruiskade boulevard a short distance from the central station.
