background

As already mentioned at the beginning, the city was the destination of Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. This is no coincidence, since the city has been a Greek colony by name since the late 7th century BC Phasis was. Remnants of the settlements were found in the Paliostomie Lake not far from the city. The city developed into an important trading point and was a station on the Silk Road. Numerous coin finds prove its importance as a trade hub between the Mediterranean and Central Asia as South asia.

Under Turkish rule, the city was expanded into a fortress and fell to Russia in 1828. Today's Poti developed under his aegis. In 1872 the city was joined by the first Georgian railway line Tbilisi connected. As Georgia soon became the most important supplier of manganese worldwide due to its high manganese deposits, Poti also became more and more important.

With the beginning of the Soviet Union, Poti became an important naval base for the Black Sea Fleet and was considered a restricted area.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, an economically difficult period followed, which has now been overcome. The port is becoming increasingly important and the turnover of goods is steadily increasing. As an oil port in particular, Poti is to be further expanded, as an oil pipeline from the Caspian Sea to connect the port with the local oil fields.

Poti is also the ferry port to Ukraine.
