getting there

By plane

1  Airport (8 km outside. Trolleybus 14 to the main station (approx. 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) or bus 117 (via Odessa-Glavnaya), to the right of the terminal exit). There is luggage storage on the ground floor (24 hours 125 UAH).

By train

Train and bus stations (both regional and long-distance) are close to each other in the city center.

The Odessa-Holovna Central Station (“Vokzal”).
2  Odessa-Holovna Central Station (Одеса-Головна), Pryvokzal'na Square, 2. Renovated, classical building. Tickets in the main hall. Seating arranged on the upper floor, which is sold as a “waiting room” and is subject to a charge (up to 12 hours 30 UAH); a ticket must be shown. It is more comfortable to sit in the heated luxury waiting room on the ground floor for 45 UAH. No currency exchange option in the train station, but in the surrounding area during the day.

After the restriction of night train traffic in the Czech Republic in 2017, there are no connections to Central Europe without changing trains, through-coaches run seasonally. Trains, including night trains, leave several times a day Kiev, Lviv and other major Ukrainian cities. In Lviv there are connections to trains from Western Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, Poland).

There is a daily night train Przemyśl-Odessa.

There is also a daily through car Warsaw-Odessa (about 24 hours).

By bus

3  Long-distance bus stop (Залізничний вокзал), left of the station forecourt (New, black building made of cuboids on the edge of the tram turning loop). For intra-Ukrainian long-distance buses that depart from the side facing the park. Diagonally opposite and clearly recognizable on the sign in Starosinna St. is the booking office of Ecolines (open 5.00-2.00, break 9.00-9.30) for international lines (direct connections to Germany are rare. It may be better to take the night train to Lviv / Lemberg, there are daily departures).Open: building 5:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., luggage storage and currency exchange daily 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Eurolines operates a bus service that runs several times a week from several German cities to Odessa at prices between € 100 and € 150. It is much cheaper, especially for travelers from southern Germany, to travel from Prague to Lviv / Lemberg and then, if necessary by night train, to Odessa.

A comfortable ("VIP") long-distance bus from the company runs several times a day to / from Kiev Avtoljuks (Tickets also at Ecolines) to Odessa about 5½-6 h for 2018 from 400 UAH with seat reservation and a stop after approx. 3 h - no toilet on the bus, but drinks and snacks are offered.

In the street

Major highways come together in Odessa, including those from Kiev, Chișinău and Mikolajyw.

The route from Chișinau to Odessa passes the internationally hardly recognized one republic Transnistria, for conditions on transit and entry into this region see the article there!

By boat

port
  • The former ferry port (Morskij voksal) is located in the middle of the city center below the famous “Potemkin Stairs”. Since 2017 it has not been used or has only been used sporadically.
  • The large ferry port is located in Chornomorsk (formerly Illichivsk), about 25 km southwest of Odessa. Start there Ferry connections with Georgia (for tickets see There), the Turkey and Bulgaria.
  • It is extremely difficult to find and reach 4  Landing point for the DFDS rail / truck ferries. In the area after the customs (no waiting room; 46.346856 N, 30.647938 O) there is an exchange office that should be open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If the ferry is delayed, you are unlucky. The numbers of taxi drivers are written on the door of the ferry building at customs, which does not help without knowledge of the Ukrainian language and a SIM card. Who from Batumi or Istanbul-Hayderpasha arrives, you should make contacts on board if possible. Even locals sometimes wait over an hour for the taxi. However, you can also leave the port on foot, walk to the main road (bridge) and climb up the embankment. If you cross the bridge in the direction of Odessa, there is a bus stop after about 300 meters. Line 25 goes directly to Odessa train station. At normal times of the day, you usually wait less than 15 minutes. However, the journey takes about an hour and costs 24 UAH (summer 2019).

If you come from the city by taxi, the branch to the terminal is directly behind the bridge, the one after the Socar- Gas station follows (46.350891 N, 30.644900 O). There is a sign about the size of a soup plate.

  • The other is much more accessible 5  Ferry terminal (Tram 27 or bus 220 (near the main station) bus stop Rubnyi Port (Рибний порт)).

mobility

  • 6  Bus station (“Avtovoksal”), Novoshchipnyi Ryad St. (Left exit of the main station via tram turnaround loop). Central starting point and transfer point for Marshrutki in the surrounding area. Behind the mentioned Priwos farmers market and bazaar.Open: early in the morning until just before midnight.

A trip by tram or trolley bus (trolley bus) or bus, no matter how far across Odessa, costs 5 UAH in July 2017, which is the equivalent of around 18 cents, and is probably the cheapest method of transportation there. There is also a dense network of shared taxis (Marshrutka), which connect the different parts of the city and cost 7-9 UAH (24-32 cents). You always pay when you get off the bus to the driver or the rather rare conductors in some trolleybuses or trams.

Taxi from or to the airport approx. 115 UAH (€ 4) per trip, not per passenger. Always agree the price beforehand - older drivers with older taxis are cheap.

activities

You can bathe and swim on the beaches south of the harbor following the Shevchenko Park from the high bank down. Trolleybus No. 2, Tram No. 28 to the terminals Luna-Park and Tram No. 5 along the beaches parallel to it.

The northernmost beach, Lansheron, which is easiest to reach on foot, is overcrowded and, with lots of concrete surfaces, wooden pallet surfaces and ladder access to the sea, is more for the frugal / frugal. The south adjoining beaches from Otrada have sand, two loungers with a mat and a parasol until June 2017 a total of 100 UAH (€ 3.50) and from July 2017 140 UAH (€ 4.91). On the beaches there are opportunities to rent bananas, kayaks, SUP, kite gliders and pedal boats. All beaches are below the high bank and you have to climb about 230 steps from the high bank to the beach - around 40 more than the Potjomkin stairs.

shop

Odessa has several larger shopping centers and supermarkets (such as "Tawria B" or "Fozzy" and "Kilometer 7"). There are also smaller grocery stores, some of which are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Bacon and smoked products in the Priwos market, as in almost all Ukrainian bazaars, without refrigeration.

The "Priwos" market near the train station is well worth a visit. From spring at the latest, you will find a large assortment of fresh fish here (the frozen food is available in all seasons), vegetables, fruit, meat, but also household goods and clothing. Most of it is direct sold by farmers. So you can't expect English to be spoken here. “Priwos” is open Tuesday-Sunday until late afternoon.

kitchen

Ukrainian cuisine is very diverse. The famous herb / beet soup "Borscht" is the favorite. The “Wareniki” dumplings filled with potatoes, mushrooms, cabbage or sour cherries are recommended as a main course. Since Odessa is by the sea, fish is often eaten here. A popular (originally Jewish dish) is “stuffed fish.” This is served cold. As a side dish you get potatoes and other vegetables. Of course, the fresh salads shouldn't be missing. The delicious "Napoleon" cake is recommended for dessert. You can get a large selection of cakes at the "Priwos" market in the milk and butter hall.

accommodation

The city imposes a 1% tourist tax, which is not always included in the price.

Learn

Russian courses are a popular option for educational trips in Odessa as the majority of the population speaks Russian, but no visa is required for Ukraine. Odessa is (as of February 2015) one of the few comparatively safe Russian-speaking cities in Ukraine. In general, both individual and group courses are available, although there is currently hardly enough demand for group courses. One-to-one courses are offered by various private teachers and schools at affordable prices.

  • Culture and language center 1  Bavarian House (Баварський Дім), ул. Успенская, 60. Tel.: 380 (0)48 777 0696. As a German cultural and meeting center, the Bavarian House (sponsor of the Bavarian Ministry of Social Affairs and the Protestant Church) is a good place to go, especially for people from Germany interested in languages.Open: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Work

Working in Odessa is usually not particularly lucrative due to the generally low wages. There are some places for social work at the German church center and in various day care centers. We are also looking for native speakers for German and English classes.

security

Odessa is not affected by the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. However, the city is very divided due to the large Russian-speaking population.[1]

It is advisable to avoid large crowds and especially political rallies!

There is also a problem with police corruption in Odessa. Especially at tourist hotspots around Arkadia, police officers occasionally suspect minor offenses ("you are not allowed to walk along here", "no smoking") and then extort sums of money. Since the number of tourists has plummeted during the Ukraine crisis, problems with police officers are also less common Pickpocketing on the beach, including by staff, is not uncommon.

In the city there is an unusually high number of private security guards in front of and in every hotel, every new residential complex with access barriers and barriers, and every supermarket.

The streets and even the footpaths themselves in the center are dangerous, as larger holes and blocking devices such as steel triangles or concrete bumps suddenly obstruct the path. Train and tram tracks are often dangerous for motorists - it is essential to adapt the route over them and the speed to the local drivers, otherwise there is at least a risk of axle breakage.

Practical advice

Public telephones are still everywhere, phone cards and tokens are sold at post offices. Ukrainian prepaid cards are sold by “hawkers” as well as at kiosks and in special mobile phone shops.

Not a single German-language newspaper or magazine was available in the whole of Odessa in July 2017. To receive numerous Ukrainian, Russian, Belarusian, Turkish and Azerbaijani TV channels, but no German-speaking or English-speaking and only very few Russian-speaking ones with English subtitles.

  1. There were occasional confrontations with injured and also fatalities, or smaller attacks, especially at meeting points of pro-Ukrainian groups or recruitment centers. For example, on May 2, 2014, 38 people died in a fire in the union building. It is believed that sympathizers of the separatist movements in eastern Ukraine were driven into this building by pro-government activists, which was then set on fire. [1]
