Chornomorsk (Чорноморськ), until 2016 Illichivsk (Іллічівськ), is a port city in the Odessa Oblast, about 25 km south of Odessa. For travelers, the ferry connections to Georgia and Turkey are particularly important, as they complement Odessa's range of ferries. Until May 2016 the city was called Illichivsk (after Vladimir Ilyich Lenin) before it was renamed by a law of Ukraine to remove Soviet place names.

background

The port was put into operation in 1958, and the city developed around it, which was granted city rights in 1973. The port is the most important and almost the only industry in the city that has the highest per capita income in Ukraine.

The city is with the larger neighbor Odessa structurally completely grown together.

In addition to the city of Chornomorsk, the urban area also includes the following settlements:

  • Olexandrivka (Олександрівка)
  • Burlatscha Balka (Бурлача Балка)
  • Malodolynske (Малодолинське - formerly German Klein-Liebental)

getting there

By plane

  • Nearest airport: Odessa

With public transport

  • Regional trains from Odessa; however, the Chornomorsk train station is far outside the city center and well away from the ferry port.
  • From Odessa there are several minibus connections (marshrutka) to the different parts of the city
  • The Burlatscha Balka district can be reached from Odessa Central Station by tram: Line 26 to the terminus 11-a Stanzyja Ljustdorfskoe Schosse, change there to line 27 to the terminus Rybnyj Port. The ferry port is also located there. However, it is difficult to reach the main town of Chornomorsk, which is on the other side of the bay.

In the street

  • From the bypass of Odessa (M-05) follow the M-27 trunk road.
  • Coming from the west (Ismail) you leave the trunk road M-15 in Menaschi and change to the regional road P-70. One drives over Bilhorod Dnistrovskyi and bypasses the mouth of the Dniester to the south. This saves you a few kilometers of transit through Moldovaon which you can lose a lot of time through controls.

By boat

At the port of Chornomorsk

The Ferry port is located in Burlacha Balka and can be reached from Odessa by trams 26-27 (destination: Rybnyj Port - fishing port). On the Chornomorsk side of the bay there is a container port and various shipyards.

The top dog in ferry traffic from Chornomorsk is the shipping company UkrFerry. The following routes are offered from Chornomorsk:

Usually cars and freight can also be taken along with passengers. However, the ferries do not necessarily run according to schedule. The travel dates can be found on the website from around one month before departure. Even then, the departure time varies depending on the weather or the booking situation. In addition to the planned travel times, you should always allow for a generous cushion of around 24 hours (customs, port clearance, etc.).
