view on the city

The city was on the railway line in 1872 Tbilisi-Potentiometer, at the western end of the mountain range over the Rikoti Pass. It was initially named Michailowo and was nothing more than a small train station with a train station settlement. When in 1884 the branch line to Borjomi was opened, Chaschuri subsequently developed into an important transport hub. The streets of Tbilisi branch off here Kutaisi or. Akhaltsikhe just like the oil pipeline from Baku to Supsa passes near the city.

In the Soviet era, because of the favorable location on the railroad, numerous industrial companies were settled, many of which are idle today. In 1917 the settlement was given its current name, and in 1921 it was granted city rights. The most important employers today are a factory for glass containers, a crude oil store and the nearby Suramula hydroelectric power station, which was built with EU support.

The city is the hometown of the Dschugaschwili family, of whom Joseph Stalin was also a descendant. In May 2000, a 2.5-meter-high Stalin monument that had been removed from the city's main square in 1956 was re-erected.

anecdote Hashur-chapuri
Trains that pass Chaschuri always stay there for a longer period of time. This is used by the female hawkers, almost always older women, who want to sell snacks to hungry travelers. The khachapuri - a cheesecake - is in Georgia the Staple food.
You can buy this snack for three lari (approx. 1.20 euros). But you won't find any cheese in it. After complaining to the saleswoman where the cheese was, the hungry traveler only got "what do you expect for three lari?" as a flippant answer. The angry answer (in Russian): "Then they don't sell a chatschapuri but 'hot bread'!" ran in the sand.
The conductor of the train just said: "Why are you buying that nonsense there? I could have told you that right away! Do you ever see any of us buy Khachapuri here?"
The moral: take provisions with you on long train journeys and do not hope for the platform dealers.
  • railway station: Trains that pass Chaschuri usually have a longer stay. Therefore, you will find numerous snack bars at the train station that sell khachapuri. The price is low, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired.
