Sestaponi is an important transit city in the Georgian region Imereti, at the confluence of the Kwirila and Dsirula rivers at the eastern end of the Colchian Plain.

background

Sestaponi (Georgian ზესტაფონი, English Zestaponi; sometimes also Sestafoni / Zestafoni) is an industrial city and railway hub in the region Imereti, Capital of the administrative district of the same name (Raioni), and important transit city on the west-east main road of Georgia (Tbilisi-Kutaisi-Samtredia-Sukhumi/Potentiometer/Batumi).

The most important branch of industry to this day is the processing of ores from the nearby mining town Chiatura, however, many of these factories have now been shut down and are falling into disrepair or are only working at a fraction of their capacity. Numerous impressive industrial ruins on the outskirts of the city testify to the former economic size.

The city is located at the mouth of the Dsirula River in the Kwirila River at the exit of the valley, at the beginning of the Colchian Plain.

During the main travel season, the highway can be heavily used. Then a lot of cars drive through the city and also strain these streets.

The trunk road (ს 1 / E 60) bypasses the city center to the north, it is advisable to drive through the city - the travel time around or through the center is about the same.

On the trunk road there are petrol stations of the most important chains (Wissol, Socar, Lukoil and Rompetrol), which are open 24 hours. There are also liquid gas filling stations.
