Adal (Awdal) is a region of the Somaliland.

To know

Most travelers who come to Adal are simply passing through on the way to Djibouti. Though often overlooked by the few tourists who come to the country, this administrative region of the self-declared republic of Somaliland is a destination in its own right. Named after the ancient Sultanate of Adal (a multi-ethnic Muslim medieval kingdom located in the Horn of Africa), the Adal region now has very little of the wealth and power that once existed here. However, it's not entirely without interesting sights, with the ancient ruins of Zeila and the spectacular coastline certainly worth a visit.

Background

In 2010, the regional government attempted to secede from the Somaliland government, which in turn had split off from the Somali government in Mogadishu. He proposed the establishment of a state called Awdalland, however from a tourist's point of view, traveling to this region is quite similar to traveling to the rest of Somaliland.
