After the Vassilakis Group took over the airline in 1994, it became today's airline in 1999 Aegean Airlines founded. Initially, destinations within Greece were served with British Avro RJ100 aircraft. In the same year the Air Greece bought up and their planes strengthened the fleet and expanded the route network. In 2001, Aegean also took over Cronus Airlines. At this point in time, 11 cities in Greece and 7 international destinations were served. Over the years, new aircraft have been integrated into the fleet and old ones taken out of service, new destinations flown to and Aegean was one of the first Greek airlines to introduce electronic tickets. A codeshare agreement has existed with the German Lufthansa, which enables airlines to sell each other's tickets to their own passengers. There are other agreements with TAP Air Portugal and Brussels Airlines from Belgium. There was also an agreement with the Italian one Air Oneuntil it went bankrupt in 2014. The former state airline Olympic Airlines, which has been known as the Olympic Air was owned by a financial investor, was taken over on October 23, 2013 and has since continued as a subsidiary for domestic Greek flights.

The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) awards the gold medal for the best airline of the year to Aegean twice, namely for 2004/05 and 2008/09. She also received other silver and bronze medals. The airline tester Skytrax rates Aegean Airlines with eight out of ten possible points[1] and named it the best regional airline in Europe in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016[2] out.

fleet

Aegean Airlines operates a relatively young fleet and has ordered additional aircraft to replace existing ones and serve new destinations. The average age of the fleet is 7.5 years (as of May 2016). Aegean Airlines currently has 1 Airbus A319, 38 Airbus A320 and 8 Airbus A321.

Alliances

Aegean is a partner of Lufthansa in the Star Alliance.

Aegean Airlines is closely involved in the network Lufthansa clamped and operated many routes between Germany and Greece in cooperation with her. This means that a flight with a Lufthansa flight number may be operated by Aegean Airlines and vice versa. This also applies to other partnerships, for example with TAP Portugal to Lisbon and Brussels Airlines to Brussels.

On June 30, 2010, Aegean Airlines joined the aviation alliance Star Alliance joined, which means that the flight schedules have been better coordinated with the partner companies and the frequent flyer programs are also compatible with each other.

Route network and hubs

Athens is home and the most important hub of Aegean Airlines. From here she flies to 16 cities in Greece and 17 in Europe. In German-speaking countries, it serves the cities of Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna from Athens. The company uses the second hub Thessaloniki, from where six Greek airports and Larnaca, as well as Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart are served.

Classes of carriage

There are two classes on board Aegean Airlines. In the cheaper Economy class drinks and snacks / meals are served free of charge on all flights, depending on the flight length and destination. In the new Airbus aircraft there is a screen at each seat on which you can follow the position of the aircraft on a map and receive further information on the flight progress.

In the more expensive one Business class you also have the advantage of extra baggage drop-off counters, free newspapers and magazines, a larger range of drinks (including alcohol) and food (different depending on the destination) and the possibility of using a lounge. Business Class passengers who have a return ticket within Greece or from Greece to Cyprus or Bulgaria will receive a free one-day rental car sponsored by Hertz.

Lounges

Business Class guests and holders of a Miles & Bonus Gold card (see frequent flyer program) can use one of the Aegean Club Lounges. At the airport Athens - Eleftherios Venizelos this is located at gate number 4. Here you can have a snack, drink a coffee or surf the Internet before the flight. There is also a separate area for smokers. In the airport of Thessaloniki the lounge is at the end of the departure gates.

Frequent flyer program

Aegean Airlines has launched its own frequent flyer program, which Miles & Bonus called. Miles are earned for every flight and car rental at Hertz, which can then be converted into flight awards, higher baggage allowances or a free car rental. Passengers receive the Blue card. Passengers who fly more than 12,000 miles a year receive the Silver Card and passengers with more than 24,000 miles in one year get the Gold card. This brings other advantages such as access to the lounges or faster luggage transport after the flight.

Owner of a Miles & More- Lufthansa cards can also earn miles on all Aegean Airlines flights. This is exactly what Aegean Airlines passengers can do with Lufthansa.

Check in

On every flight you have to check in at least 30 minutes before departure, otherwise you will lose your seat. You can do this directly at the airport at the respective baggage drop-off counter or at a so-called self-check-in machine (only with hand luggage and only at selected Greek airports). Another option is to check in via the internet, but this is only possible if you have an electronic ticket and only have hand luggage. In this case you go up www.de.aegeanair.com and click on the "Organize" tab on the home page check in. Now you have to enter the booking code or the ticket number and possibly the information about the frequent flyer program. You can then choose a seat on the next page.

Booking options

Flight bookings can be made via the airline's website, processed via the telephone hotline at 30 210 626 1000 or made in a travel agency.
