Ajloun (or Ajlun) is a historic site in the north of Jordan.
background
In the realm of today Ajloun Castle (Adschlun fortress) there was a monastery in Byzantine times. On its ruins was in 1184/85 under a commander of the Muslim troops under Saladin built a fortress, which prevented the crusaders from expanding their empire to the east. The fortress was expanded under the Mameluks in 1214/15 by the southeast tower and the gate. When the Mongols invaded in 1160, the fortress was damaged and restored under Baibars.
During the Ottoman rule the fortress was occupied by around 50 soldiers; so it was found by the Swiss traveler Johann Burckhardt in 1812. The fortress was damaged in the earthquake of 1837/1927 and has been restored in recent years.

- 1 Great Ajloun Mosque , The great mosque was built on the ruins of a Byzantine church, the minaret has a peculiar appearance, as the lowest section was built on the former church tower.
