Geographical notes

The archaeological site seen from above

100 km west of Doha, on the west side of the Qatar peninsula. The archaeological site is located on the coast a short distance from the fort, passing the gate and continuing by car along the dirt path to the rest area.

How to get

By bus

It is possible to reach the fort by public transport. Bus 100 (see routes here) to Al Shamal leaves from Al Ghanim bus station three times a day. The journey takes about two hours each way. If you are planning a day trip from Doha, your only option is to take the first departure from Doha at 10:15 am and take the last 4:43 pm bus back to Zubarah back to the city. It will take about 4 and a half hours to the fort, which is more than enough to observe the surrounding environment. An alternative for those wishing to spend more than a day in the surrounding area is to take the 18:12 bus nº100 from Zubarah onwards to one of the nearby towns, such as the northernmost coastal village of Al Ruwais, where you can catch later the 101 evening bus back to Doha.

Permits / Rates

Admission to both sites is free, the sites close at 5pm.

Fort Al Zubarah
The museum
  • 1 Fort Al Zubarah. Ecb copyright.svgfree. An ancient fort listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. This museum-turned fort was built in 1938 during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Jassim Al-Thani and was erected on the ruins of a nearby fort. The fort is square in shape with circular towers in three of its corners and a rectangular tower in the fourth. With high, thick walls, this fort also served as a coast guard station and, until the mid-1980s, was used by the military. Al Zubarah on Wikipedia Al Zubarah (Q2727469) on Wikidata
  • 2 Museum (placed next to the fort). Inside a prefabricated building there is a small museum where some finds and images of the nearby archaeological site are exhibited.

Archaeological site

One of the watchtowers of the surrounding wall
  • 3 Ruins of Al Zubarah. This is the archaeological site of the city of Al Zubarah, located in a desert area next to the sea. The fenced era is quite large, which suggests how small the surface of the site is unearthed. Of the site remain some remains of the surrounding wall, the towers and some mud and stone houses. A circular path with explanatory panels shows the few remains of this ancient settlement. Although its archaeological importance may have some historical significance, the site despite being Unesco is quite disappointing. Only those who are passionate about archeology will find a minimum of interest.

What to do

The beach

From the site you can reach the beach which is not always clean, often there is garbage and plastic carried by the current.

Shopping

There is no gift shop or anything else.

Where to eat

There is no dining area.

Where stay

Along the way there are some accommodations but they are not in the immediate vicinity. We still recommend staying in Doha where there is plenty of choice.

Safety

There are bathrooms at the fort.
