History
In 1867, Alaska was purchased from the Russians for $7.2 million (about 2 cents per acre). People thought this state an icy land, not realizing that it would become one of the biggest sources of fuel and gold for the USA. It took until 1959 for Alaska to become a union state.

The Alaska State Flag, adopted in 1927, was designed by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old student. It is composed of 8 yellow stars that represent the Big Dipper and the North Star. The Big Dipper is shaped like a bear, an Alaskan indigenous animal. The Polar Star claims Alaska as the northernmost state in the United States of America.
