Alcoutim is a small town in in the northeast of Algarve.

background

Alcoutim is a tranquil town on the Rio Guadiana, the border river to Spain. Both Alcoutim and the Spanish place opposite Sanlúcar de Guadiana have fortresses, which remind you that the border location used to be often the result of armed conflicts. Alcoutim owes its existence to the fact that the ships on the Guadiana had to wait here due to the tides until they could continue downstream at high tide. Today the place is struggling with a high level of emigration, which the authorities are trying to counteract by promoting tourism, among other things. The town definitely justifies a short stop as part of a day trip from the coast.
