The city was called Verny (Верный) in Tsarist Russia and from 1921 to 1994 its official name was Alma-Ata. Since then, the official name has been Almaty. Until 1997, Almaty was the capital of Kazakhstan and after that Nursultan the capital. The Kazakh name Almaty means rich in apples or, according to less cited sources, strong mountain. At the time of the former Soviet Union, the city was called Alma-Ata, which was wrongly translated as grandfather apple. There is a considerable diversity of apples in the vicinity of the city.

Most residents are ethnic Russians; Kazakhs are also a large group. The city has been repeatedly ravaged by earthquakes and mudslides.
