Altjeßnitz is a former Saxon (since 1815 Prussian) exclave, surrounded by Anhalt area and thus, despite the similarity of the name, has only been a municipality with Jeßnitz since 2010. The place was an estate district owned by the barons of Ende, who built a manor house and a baroque manor park with a maze, which is now the main attraction of the place.

Tourist Attractions

church

The main attraction of the municipality is its baroque square and 2600 square meters maze in the middle of the Castle parks. It is the oldest and largest of its kind in Germany. The paths of the maze are lined by hornbeam hedges approx. 2 m high. The shortest possible path between the center of the garden and the shared entrance and exit is 400 m and could be covered in six minutes.

The maze belonged to the Altjeßnitz manor castle built in 1699 by Hans Adam Freiherr von Ende (1633 - 1706) from Halle, but which was largely destroyed by fire in January 1946 and demolished in 1975. The maze was laid out by Leopold Nicolas Freiherr von Ende (1713 - 1792) around 1730 and subsequently changed several times.

At the entrance to the maze is a statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, marriage and death.

Since June 2, 2007, the maze has been open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in summer and from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in winter.

In the southern garden area there is one made of field stones church from the 12th century. From Manor Castle only one gate tower remains today. There is also a children's playground in the garden.

The park and the maze are located in the center of the village to the east of the main road between the streets "Neuer Weg" and "Straße des Friedens", which turn west.
