Amed

Amed is a long strip of fishing villages in the Eastern Bali.

To know

Amed is a city made up of several villages on the east coast of Bali: Culik, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Selang, Banyuning is Aas. The flow of life here is slow and the coastal geography is incredible. A perfect place for a relaxing holiday and has become a tourist center in very recent times; it must be thought that the asphalt on the road was laid for the first time in 2000, the telephone lines were installed in 2003 and the bridge that runs over the stretch of road continuously flooded by rain was finished in 2007.

This is the base usually used by visitors who want to dive to see the wreck of the USAT Liberty Wreck a Tulamben. There are also other good places to dive, so the diving industry here is very thriving.

The locals live mainly from fishing, salt production and tourism. Due to the hostile environment to agriculture this was the poorest place in Bali and thanks to various projects, including the East Bali Poverty Project which have drawn attention to the critical situation of the inhabitants, together with recent development, have greatly improved the situation, the quality of life, health and local education.

How to orient yourself

A beautiful sunset over Amed

Finding your way around Amed is very simple, as the villages that form it are all lined up along the main road and the side roads lead either to the sea or to the hotels.

How to get

A glimpse of Amed

By plane

Amed is located on the north east tip of Bali, just over two hours drive from the international airport. Taxi service is therefore available and costs around Rp 500,000, accessed by turning east from the village of Culik which is on the main coastal road from Karangasem to Singaraja.

By bus

Shuttle buses regularly serve the destination from Candidasa and Lovina. Perama operates additional shuttles from Padang Bai or Candidasa to Tirtagangga, Amed and Tulamben (Rp 125,000 for at least two people). Departure 09:30 and 14:30, return 11:00. There is no Perama office in Amed.

By car

The best way to get here is by hiring a private chauffeured transport. It should be noted that the Amed district extends for more than 10km. Transport with local drivers is easily available in the village, just ask the hotel where you are staying or around. Transportation to Padang Bai should cost no more than Rp 150,000.

On boat

If you come from the east of the island the company Amed Sea Express offers transfers to Lombok, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air with a service that departs a couple of times a day, arriving in Amed at 09:15 and 13:15.

How to get around

On foot or by moped are the best options for getting around.

By public transport

Public transport in Amed is rare. There are some bemo from Culik especially in the morning. Late in the day it is impossible to find any. The best way to get around is by renting a car with a driver. Scooters can also be rented and cost Rp 50,000-80,000 per day.

What see

The beach of Amed, during the rainy period, is dotted with fishing boats

The beaches of Amed are dotted with traditional fishing boats (mainly Indonesian, Balinese are rarer) and provide a beautiful backdrop for photographic occasions, as well as sometimes making walking a little more difficult. They are made up of black lava stones and moving away from Mount Agung they become a little more sandy. The most beautiful bays are in Jemeluk and Lipah although the whole coast is very beautiful.

The production of salt it is in decline but is still an important industry in the area. Driving along the coast passing the villages you will be able to see large plots encrusted with salt. The boxes of Bali salt crystals that can be bought in grocery stores around the world begin their long journey here.

There sea life here it is in turmoil near the coast made of crystal clear waters.

There is a wooden wreck just 1.5 meters deep just off Lipah Beach. Banyuning is great for diving and snorkeling with lots of coral and marine life; this place is known as the "Japanese Wreck" and is well signposted, with plenty of parking and gear rental on site.

A beautiful nudibranch (Nudibranch Risbecia-Tryoni) in Tulamben

In Jemeluk Bay you can enjoy excellent diving from the beach and from the boat. After a light descent from the water's edge, the wall then drops drastically with a depth of over 40m. The coral here is healthy and marine life is abundant. You can drift further east in Selang and Bunutan but are suitable for the more experienced.

Tulamben

A detail of the USAT Liberty wreck
USAT Liberty

Tulamben is a small fishing village 30km north of Amed, about 20-30 minutes driving. Here the most famous dive is the USAT Liberty wreck. Some operators are based here where all hotels have their own dive center or are associated with one. Local operators can dive from the beach because both the wreck and the two dive spots are less than 100m from the shore.

The USAT Liberty was a US Army transport ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942. The wreck is located approximately 30m from shore and is covered in soft coral. A large variety of reef fish have made a home here and there are occasionally visits from pelagic fish. Part of the wreck can also be seen by snorkelers. There are other diving spots in Tulamben and diving enthusiasts tend to stay in this area for a few days. A night dive is highly recommended where you can see some clownfish and there are chances to see the "Spanish dancer" nudibranch.

Shopping

There are few shops in Amed that sell necessities other than sarongs and t-shirts. There aren't many artisans or clothes shops that can be found in other more developed areas of Bali.

There are various ATMs along the main road.

How to have fun

For an evening of entertainment, a local music group plays live at the Double One Restaurant once a week, and there are sometimes free Balinese dance performances at some restaurants. However, Amed is generally very quiet in the evenings and definitely not the place for revelers. However, the best places to spend the evening are the Wawa Wewe beach restaurant or the Pacha Bar.

  • 1 Rasta Bar, Jl. Ketut Natih, Pantai Timur (from the bus stop in the village of Amed follow the main road east for 650m where you will find the sign indicating the Rasta Bar on the left). Everyone knows each other consequently you get the real feeling of living in a village. The hotels are spacious giving the feeling of having their own space. There are few televisions in the rooms, so it is advisable to bring a good book or it is an excellent opportunity to socialize with the locals. Life goes by slowly here, and the inhabitants have time and are kind.

How to keep in touch

Telephony

Servizi di internet pubbica sono disponibili all'Amed Cafe, ad Amed, oppure a Lipah vicino all'Hidden Paradise oppure all'Anda Amed a Bunutan.
