background
Ammouliani (Greek: Αμμολλιανή), or Amoliani, is an island in the Greek region Chalkidiki, 120 km from Thessaloniki away. Until the early 1900s, Ammouliani belonged to the Vatopedi Monastery Athos. In 1925 the island was given to the families of the refugees who had come from the islands of the Propontis (Marmaras Sea) after the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-22. Today the island has over 500 inhabitants and is very touristy, as are the small neighboring islands of Drenia and Pena. You can also explore it as a day trip, preferably by motorcycle or quad, if you want to go to the less accessible places. Apart from the beautiful beaches and the typical tourist flair, the island has no sights. It's a place to relax.
getting there
- Ferry connection. The island can be reached from the port of Trypiti, where there are regular ferry connections. The boat trip takes only 15 minutes.
Tourist Attractions
- 1 Ammouliani city (Αμμουλιανή Χαλκιδικής). is the only place on the island.
- 1 Drenia. uninhabited island with beautiful managed beaches.
- 2 Pena. small island next to Ammouliani with beautiful managed beaches.
activities
- Day trips to Mount Athos: From the port boats go along the coast of Athos, where you can see the important monasteries
- Drenia Islands, Pena: From the port boats go to a small group of islands 2 nautical miles from Ouranoupoli, where you can experience the excellent beaches
beaches
Amouliani's biggest draw are its beaches. Most are accessible by bike or car, although there are some that are only accessible by boat. In addition to the ones mentioned below, there are a number of other, more difficult to access but much quieter beaches.
- 1 Karagatsi beach. Nice beach with a beach bar but hard to get there without a car or motorcycle. Untouched nature, crystal clear sea. Sandy beach, not very deep sea, quiet place for a nice family vacation.
- 2 Alykes beach. Very nice beach with three different beach bars that are within an acceptable distance from each other. Soft music, nice mostly calm atmosphere, cocktails. Sandy beach. There is also a campsite.
- 3 Agios Georgios Beach. nice and reasonably quiet sandy beach with a restaurant and natural shade. Not too many sun beds with a breathtaking view of the mainland.
- 4 Gripos Beach. Nice and quiet place. The beach is small and not overpopulated. There is parking, but the last part of the road is not good. The only beach on the island with large umbrellas. There are two tavernas nearby.
- 5 Megali Ammos beach. good beach with crystal clear water and beach bars the way there is bad and the beach was unfortunately built in a pretty ugly way but with a very nice view.
shop
Everything you need for daily life is available in the supermarkets and small shops in town, pharmacy, bakery, etc. also.
kitchen
There is a sufficient number of restaurants, snack bars, pizzerias, cafes in town and on the large beaches.
nightlife
The nightlife is limited to the place and some of the beach bars, which are posted on their events.
accommodation
There are a large number of accommodations that are listed and rated in the well-known Internet hotel portals and airbnb. Since the island is quite small, you should book well in advance during the main season.
