On the territory of the municipality, excavations have brought to light an epipaleolithic site (-8,500 years) with its tools of cut flint and hammers as well as a Neolithic station where polishers, grinding wheels and pottery were recovered. The Ligurian population who inhabited the site traded with the Massaliotes as evidenced by the discoveries of Greek coins. The village was first mentioned in 963, when Lambert de Reillanne gave the Saint-Pierre de Montmajour abbey land located in Ansoye. This suggests that this stronghold, like much of the Luberon, belonged in the 9th century to his grandfather Foucher de Valensole. Then the village passed to the Sabran family, in 1178, through the union of Raimon I with Garsende, sovereign countess of Forcalquier. For eight centuries, the lion of the Sabran has been floating over the village.
