Geographical notes
It is located in the flat area in the center of the Vaucluse Prealps, bordered to the south by the Luberon massif. It is crossed by the Calavon river and the rivers Dôa, Riaille, Marguerite, Rimayon flow into its territory
Background
It was the ancient Roman colony of Apta, founded by Gaius Julius Caesar and then colonized again by Hadrian in Narbonne Gaul. The Via Domitia passed through it.
In 1851 it was the commune leader of the brief republican revolt carried out by some communes of Vaucluse against the coup d'état of Napoleon III, quickly suffocated by the decisive but bloodless intervention of General Vinoy.
