Aquileia (Aquileia in Italian, Aquilee in Friulian) is a city in the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the province of Udine. This city of 3,500 inhabitants was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire, then during the Middle Ages a high place of the Christian religion. It is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO;

Historically founded in -181 before J-C the city will quickly grow, especially under the emperor Augustus who named it "Capital of the X^elegion "; it will be compared thereafter to a second Rome. The city was also famous because the church which was then built there from the starting point of the evangelization of towards the East of Europe, until Hungary . But alas the city was razed and sacked by Attila and his men in AD 452. In the year 800, after being crowned king, Charlemagne stopped at Aquileia to obtain the blessing of the Patriarch. in 1420, the Pratriarchate of Aquileia single-handedly ruled Friuli and Veneto; and as well as part of Slovenia and Istria. It will keep control of the Veneto until 1751.

On the A4 Venezia-Trieste motorway, take the exit "Palmanova", then take the direction of Cervignano del Friuli and Grado.

The nearest airports are: - Aeroporto Friuli-Venezia Giulia (http://aeroporto.fvg.it), via Aquileia 60, in Ronchi dei Legionari, from where direct buses leave for Aquileia, - Aeroporto Marco Polo di Venezia (http://veniceairport.it), viale Galilei, in Tessera. Take the train to Venice and get off at Cervignano del Friuli station.

Aquileia does not have a railway station. The nearest station is Cervignano, on the Venice-Trieste line, approximately 8 km.
