Udine is a northern Italian city in Friuli Venezia Giulia and capital of the province of the same name.

background

Udine is after Trieste the second largest city in the region and the most important city in the historical Friuli region, it is only 20 km from the Slovenian border.

The first documented mention dates back to 983, but archaeological finds indicate that the city was much older. Over the centuries, the city walls were expanded five times to keep up with the population growth, in the 13th century. The city first got market rights and later tax exemption, which at the time also led to an influx of people. Beginning of the 16th century an earthquake wreaked havoc in the city. During the First World War, Udine was temporarily the seat of the Italian high command. During the Second World War, Udine was under German administration between 1943 and 1945.

Today the cityscape is not only characterized by historical palaces, but also by a young student population, the University of Friuli has almost 16,000 students.
