Venice (Italy. Venezia, English Venice) is the capital of the region Veneto. As a trading city and capital of a colonial empire in the eastern Mediterranean, Venice was one of the richest cities in the world in the Middle Ages and still shows a rare density of cultural treasures today. The part of the city located in the lagoon has retained its uniqueness, where traffic still flows on foot or by boat to this day.

Districts

The urban area of Venice extends beyond the lagoon to the mainland, which is now the focus of the population. The districts are located there

  • Mestre, in which there are numerous inexpensive accommodations
  • Marghera with its industrial and ferry port

In the tourist sense, the term narrows to the historical Venice and thus to the archipelago with the main island around the Grand Canal, which this article is about. Historic Venice is divided into six districts (sestiere):

  • San Polo,
  • Santa Croce
  • Cannaregio,
  • Castello,
  • San Marco and
  • Dorsoduro with the island of Giudecca.

San Polo, Santa Croce and Dorsoduro with Santa Maria della Salute are on the western and southern sides of the Grand Canal, Castello with San Pietro, the former Patriarchal Church, Cannaregio and San Marco on the eastern and northern sides. The most populous district is Cannaregio (around a third of the "Venetians" live here), this is also where the Venezia Santa Lucia train station is located. (See literature: Venice is a fish.)

The lagoon islands are also districts of Venice

  • Murano
  • Burano
  • Torcello

and the spit in front of the lagoon

  • Venice Lido.

background

The islands of the lagoon were inhabited as early as the 5th century. Legend has it that the inhabitants of the mainland, fleeing from the Huns, founded settlements on the lagoon islands.

In the Middle Ages Venice rose to become the most powerful maritime republic thanks to the wealth acquired through a trade monopoly for various goods from Asia and the Orient. With numerous conquests in the Adriatic and Aegean, Venice also became the most important military power in the eastern Mediterranean. With the discovery of America and the sea route to India at the end of the 15th century, Venice's importance as a trading power gradually began to decline. In the 17th century Venice gradually lost all conquered areas in the Aegean Sea to the Ottoman Empire. The conquest by Napoleon in 1797 finally ended Venice's independence. From 1815 Venice belonged to Austria-Hungary until it became the newly founded state of Italy in 1866.

Today the historical center still has approx. 55,000 inhabitants with a decreasing trend. Since the middle of the 20th century, the population has shifted significantly from the historic center and the islands to the mainland: while in 1951 55% of the inhabitants lived in the historic center, 14% on the offshore islands and 21% in the mainland districts 2006 only 23% in the historical center, 11% on the offshore islands and two thirds on the mainland. Since the 1970s, however, the total population of Venice (including the mainland districts) has also declined: from 363,000 in 1971 to 261,000 in 2017.

Venice is economically dependent on tourism, but with 30 million tourists annually, the city is increasingly reaching its limits. Especially in the warmer months, blocked roads, overcrowded boats and gigantic amounts of rubbish bring Venice to its limits. That is why there have been calls for years to limit mass tourism. Discussions include an entrance fee for St. Mark's Square and a ban on cruise ships. At least the largest ships are to be diverted in the future (from 2019) in order to reduce environmental pollution.

In addition to the "island city", other places on the mainland belong to the municipality of Venice (Tessera, Mestre, Marghera, Campalto, Trivignano and others). They are more industrial or have the character of “sleeping cities” and therefore have little to offer tourists. In addition, Venice is the capital of the eponymous Venice Province and the Veneto region.

By train

Santa Lucia train station

It was built in 1861 and was previously replaced by the Church of S. Lucia, whose name he has adopted.

Venezia S.L. and Mestre are on the international railway lines Villach-Udine-Treviso-Mestre-Venezia, Venezia-Mestre-Padova-Bologna-Florence-Rome and others. There is a connection to and from the Brenner Railway in Verona P.N.

The 1 Venezia Sta Lucia City train station Santa Lucia is over the 5 km long bridge Ponte dell'Libertà connected to the mainland and is located directly on the Grand Canal. All long-distance and regional trains of the Italian domestic traffic as well as the night trains from Germany and Austria arrive here. All trains to and from Venezia S.L. also stop in Mestre.

By bus

Local and national buses stop at 2 Piazzale Roma Tourist buses generally stop on the specially built parking island 3 Tronchetto. The route network of the local buses extends far beyond Mestre. Recently there was a tariff reform, which unfortunately puts visitors at a severe disadvantage: The cheaper tariffs (1.30 € (bus) / 2.50 € (boat) are only available for owners of an "Imob" card who are not available to visitors Well worth it (except as a season ticket, see below). Without such a card, a single journey costs € 6 (bus) / € 7.00 (boat).
Therefore the best solution is to buy a season ticket for the whole network. The prices are staggered according to time periods: € 18 (12 h), € 20 (24 h), € 25 (36 h), € 30 (48 h), € 35 (72 h), € 50 (7 days) and apply from the validation on the first trip.
(Additional Information: actv.it)

In addition, there should be the option of individually combinable prepaid cards for museums and local public transport VeneziaUnica be reconsidered.

In the street

While you can reach destinations in the districts of Mestre and Lido (arrival by ferry) by car, the touristically interesting old town of Venice is completely car-free. If you want to go to the old town - like most tourists - you have to park your car either on the mainland or in one of the (very expensive) garages on Piazzale Roma or on Tronchetto. The parking lot on Tronchetto costs € 21.00 (as of 09/2016) for 24 hours from check-in. The parking spaces closest to the center at Piazzale Roma (Autorimessa Comunale and Garage San Marco) have to be paid for at around 30 euros / day.

It is a little cheaper if you park the car in a garage in Mestre and then take the train to Venice (one leaves every few minutes, the journey takes around 10 minutes; the one-way trip cost € 1.00 in 2010). Directly opposite the train station is a parking garage (Parcheggio Stazione), in which you can park for € 2.50 / hour at a maximum of € 14.00 per day (until midnight) (as of 09/2016). If you only stay one or two nights, the parking garage on Tronchetto may be cheaper because of the billing after 24 hours. Another option is to park the car in Punta Sabbioni for a one-time fee of up to € 7 per day (as of 2015) and then take the boat to St. Mark's Square in around 40 minutes.

For those staying longer, it is advisable to park their car on one of the numerous private parking spaces near the airport (e.g. www.alipark.it/de/), which are usually fenced and guarded and at 5 € / day significantly cheaper than the parking garages in Mestre or even Venice. The operators offer a free shuttle service to the boat docks at the airport, where you can be picked up and brought back to your car after making an appointment by telephone. The price of the ACTV vaporetto to Venice and back is included in the ACTV Tourist Ticket, so before departure, pick up the ticket you have ordered online in the ACTV airport office (easy to reach on foot from the jetty) and make sure that you also get on the ACTV vaporetto to Venice (not the Alilaguna Linea Blu boat, for which the ticket is not valid). Line B goes to Fondamente Nove and line A through the Grand Canal to St. Mark's Square, but does not stop at every stop in the Canal. Exists via Terminal Fusina on the mainland. It is particularly suitable if you want to go on a day trip to Venice, as it is very cheap for 12 hour bookings. Online bookings receive additional discounts. The journey to Fusina via the main road from Padua, along the Brenta Canal, is impressive, as it leads past a number of the most beautiful villas in the Veneto, including Villa Nazionale and Villa Malcontenta. In Venice you travel via the Giudecca Canal and get off at the Zattere station, which is located at the back of the Accademia, just a few minutes' walk from Santa Maria Salute, the Peggy Guugenheim Museum and the punto della dogana, with its breathtaking view the palazzo ducale, the Doge's palace.

Venice is the end of the European Goethestrasse, in the Carlsbad starts.

  • 4  Terminal Fusina Venezia (Circolar linea Fusina, Alternative arrival by car / ship to Venice), Via Moranzani, 79, 30176 Venezia VE, Italy (Parking lot and mooring directly on the lagoon). Tel.: 39 041 547 0160, Fax: 39 041 5479133, Email: . Terminal Fusina Venezia is a guarded car park with a dock for crossings to Venice from the mainland. It offers space for cars and buses and can be reached via the A4 motorway and federal highway 309 “Romea”. The ferry service runs every hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. all year round to Venice, Zattere stop, and longer in the carnival season and in summer.Open: daily 8 am-6.30pm, longer depending on the season.Price: from 18.00 € for 12h parking and arrival and departure 1 person.Accepted payment methods: online PayPal only, cash on site, no further details.

By boat

The People movers provides a connection to the bus station during the day from around 7.30 a.m. for € 1.50. The stops are Tronchetto (small ships) <==> Marittima (ferries, cruise ships) <==> Piazzale Roma (bus station). The Santa Lucia Venezia train station is 500 meters away on foot. There is a direct bus service from Piazzale Roma to Marco Polo Airport.

Cruise ship

Ferries

  • From / to Greece: With Anek or Minoan one reaches the new port of Patras. There are often stops in Ancona, Igoumenitsa or on Corfu. The connections are daily in summer and 2-3 times a week in the off-season. Deck class, the cheapest offer, costs € 93 for the entire route in autumn 2020.
  • From / to Croatia, more precisely Istria: Poreč (it. Parenzo. West coast), Pula (it. Pola) and Rabac (Kvarner Bay). A provider is VeneziaLineswhose speedboats in 2020 for € 60 p.p. costs.
  • From / to Slovenia: Piran(O).

Sailors

The entrance to the 6 Porto di Lido leads into the lagoon. The 1 Port Police ("Polizia di Frontiera Presso Scalo Marittimo ed Aereo di Venezia") is not far from the cruise terminal.

mobility

Since there are no cars, bicycles or trains in the historic center from Piazzale Roma, you have to rely on footpaths or waterways. Venice can be explored on foot, but there are many (approx. 400) bridges with stairs.

They drive on the water Vaporetti (Line boats) des ACTV, some private ships (not all are allowed to drive on the Grand Canal) and the very expensive taxi boats (e.g. St. Mark's Square – Tronchetto, duration approx. 10 minutes, approx. 80 euros). The vaporetto lines 1 and 2, which run from Piazzale Roma via the train station (Ferrovia), Rialto and Accademia to St. Mark's Square cost € 7.50. If you stay longer or make more than 3 trips on the same day, it is advisable to buy a Tourist Travel Card (Biglietto Turistico a Tempo), which allows an unlimited number of trips during the period of validity and is also valid for the ACTV buses to the mainland .

The period of validity always begins with the one-time validation before the start of the first journey. Some Vaporetti run around the clock (night lines are marked with N in the crescent symbol). All information, prices and route maps are available, also in English, here.

Here you can book the tickets online. You will then receive a voucher and a code (PNR) and have two options to get the ticket. The first option is to take the printout to the ticket sales point and have it converted into a ticket there. Unfortunately you have to join the "normal" line of ticket buyers. Attention: If you leave the train station, please turn to the right and go to the point of sale there, not to the left as shown on the homepage! The second and faster way to get the ticket is to use one of the ticket machines and use the PNR code to print out the ticket. Ticket machines are available at all larger Vaparatto stations.

If you want to enjoy the Grand Canal, it is advisable to take a line 1 boat. This stops at every stop between Piazzale Roma and the Lido along the Grand Canal, so you have enough time to take a close look at all the palaces from the outside. A trip in the dark in the evening can also be worthwhile, because you might see the magnificent Murano glass chandeliers and stucco ceilings in the palaces. With the line 4.2 or 4.1 (the lines only differ in the direction of travel) one drives around Venice in about an hour. If you don't want to go to the island of Murano, you have to change or disembark at the Fondamente Novè.

You can travel individually on the water with water taxis and gondolas. A 50-minute gondola ride costs € 80, which is spread over a maximum of 6 passengers, half an hour € 40. Correspondingly more at night. It's romantic in the gondola, but you often go down a predetermined path in procession.

A gondola ride is cheaper if you use a traghetto, i. H. a gondola ferry across the Grand Canal (official price € 2, only 70 cents for locals and tourists who look like locals). A rather shaky affair (due to the swell caused by the many boats it is no longer customary to stand today, even Venetians are already sitting in a traghetto) of a few minutes, certainly not comparable to a real gondola ride. Between the train station and St. Mark's Square there are 5 places where a traghetto crosses the canal, an essential addition to the four bridges on this route. The fourth, 94 m long bridge “Ponte della Costituzione” by the Spanish star architect Santiago Calatrava from Piazzale Roma to the train station was inaugurated in September 2008.

and numerous other church buildings

Admission to the Markuskirche is free, access to the gallery, treasury or Pala d'Oro has to be paid extra. Only a limited number of people will be admitted, waiting times are to be expected.

The weekday evening mass in front of the "Nicopea Madonna" in St. Mark's Church is very atmospheric; Start is at 6:45 p.m.

It is also highly recommended if you have enough time, e.g. to attend the solemn high mass on the Saturday before Pentecost in the marvelous St. Mark's Basilica. The cardinal patriarch, Francesco Moraglia since 2012, celebrates with the faithful in his diocese starting at around 6:00 p.m. The church is wonderfully lit and if you sit down cheaply, you can study the wonderful, impressive frescoes carefully during the service, without being pushed through the relatively dark cathedral in the hustle and bustle of the day. On this evening the "Pala d`oro" is also "open" and directed towards the public.

The Frarikirche and numerous others are united in the chorus organization. You can purchase a collective ticket for these (€ 9), which is valid for all participating churches. For comparison: single entry € 3.00.

The "Frari Church" (Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari) with its artfully carved choir stalls are particularly worth seeing. Here is a rood screen that "divides" the church. Everyone is advised to go all the way to the back and then from the main portal very slowly to the front and between the choir stalls, always with a view of the high altar picture. There is the Canova tomb and several doge tombs here. As soon as possible afterwards you should go to Santi Giovanni e Paolo, called "San Zanipolo", because here is a huge church, where the enormous size comes out well, as it is not "divided" by a rood screen. There are many doge tombs (shorthand, etc.) here. The spatial effect is unique! And the large side window on the front right made of Murano glass has an unlikely luminosity!

Santo Stefano is a wonderful church with a very attractive coffered ceiling.

kitchen

Venetian cuisine is determined by its proximity to the sea. Many fish dishes (e.g. spaghetti al Vongole, with mussels), also risotto (rice dish).

The purple artichoke is a specialty from the lagoon; the vegetable is grown on the lagoon island of Sant’Erasmo. Especially the very first buds, the tender ones Castraure, Are popular. From the beginning of April to mid-May, the Venetians snatch the artichokes from the traders' hands. The delicacy almost never makes it to national markets. On the second Sunday of May, the feast of Artichoke Violetto is celebrated on the island of Sant’Erasmo.

A specialty that is offered in many places is "Fegato alla Venexiana con Polenta" (liver in Venetian with polenta).

Many bars have cicchetti, slices of white bread with a variety of different side dishes.

There is a noticeable price gap for restaurants from east to west: high-priced noble restaurants in San Marco and Castello, numerous, cheaper pizzerias in Cannaregio.

There are also numerous self-service restaurants and fast food places of all sizes across the island.

Cheap

In bars and cafés, it is cheaper to stand than to sit down. Many Venetians quickly drink a coffee (approx. € 1) or a glass of wine ("un ombra", € 0.80-1.60) while standing at the bar. The term "un ombra" for a glass of wine, ombra Italian for shadow, comes from the time when there was no possibility of cooling the wine in the warm season. The wine merchants followed the shadows of the buildings to keep the wine as cool as possible.

Pizza is also sold in one piece ("al taglio") to take away, each piece around € 1-3.50. It gets cheaper the further you are from the tourist centers (Piazza San Marco, Rialto).

  • 1  La Vecia Cavana, Rio Terà SS. Apostoli (Cannaregio). Popular restaurant, not far from Campo Santi Apostoli, known for fish specialties.
  • 2  Trattoria al Gazettino (San Marco. A little south of the church of S. Fava.). Very good cuisine, served tastefully.
  • 3  Ristorante Malibran (Down-to-earth, friendly service, good food, affordable prices), Cannaregio 5864 - 30131 Venezia (VE) (240 m northeast. Rialto Bridge, northwest Malibran Theater).

Upscale

  • 4  Caffè Florian, Piazza San Marco. One of the oldest cafes in Venice. In addition to the already high prices (an espresso costs € 6.50) there is a surcharge for the musicians. This is the coffee house that the Italians used to visit when the Austrians ruled here.
  • 5  Caffè Quadri *. (An espresso costs 6.00 €) also Piazza San Marco, is the one that was visited by German speakers during the Austrian rule. There is also a music surcharge here.
  • 6  Caffè Lavena *. Third, third music café (an espresso costs € 6.20) on St. Mark's Square. According to tradition, Richard Wagner sometimes even waved the baton here.

The other two coffee houses on St. Mark's Square are the "Eden", located right next to the "Quadri", and the "Astoria" between "Florian" and Campanile; There is no music surcharge here and the prices are only slightly below those of the three aforementioned. The music surcharge in 2013 was between € 6.00 and € 8. Music surcharge is only to be paid for the first (!!) consumption.

  • 7  Gran Caffè Chioggia. Music café that brings rather slightly jazzed music.
  • 8  Al Todaro. at the foot of the column with "St. Theodor". From here you have a wonderful view of San Giorgio Maggiore, of the Paglia (straw) bridge, of the Doge's Palace with the two slightly reddish columns between which the death sentence has been pronounced, of St. Mark's Basilica and the clock tower. When it's hot, a pleasantly cool fan usually blows here.

nightlife

Bars and restaurants in every price range for every taste.

In the evenings, students and young adults meet in the bars on Campo Santa Margherita.

accommodation

The hotel prices are also adjusted to the overall high price level. But even with hotels of the same quality class, even located in the same street or its extension, there are significant price differences. But there are also private quarters that can be ordered per week, for example.

Especially in the main travel season (summer, carnival) you should definitely reserve a room in advance. If you are traveling on a tight budget, you should consider booking in Mestre, especially if you are traveling by car, because the bus is faster and (much) cheaper to get to the city. A bus ride costs 1 €. It is also recommended to stay on the Lido di Venezia. Line 1 takes you to St. Mark's Square in 15 minutes.

And yet one should consider whether the display for a quarter in Venice is not worth it after all. Nothing can replace the flair of living in the city itself. A short tour in the morning, between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. through Venice, or a short run through deserted streets to the empty St. Mark's Square and then quickly back to the hotel for breakfast, is a real experience. Or when you enjoy the wonderful Chioccolatta con Panna outside in the Caffé Florian in the late evening. It's not cheap, but it's indescribably good!

  • Sprache: In Venedig spricht man naturgemäß hauptsächlich Italienisch.

Fondamenta Nova die Inseln Murano, Mazzorbo, Burano and Lido at.
