Patras is the third largest city in Greece.
background
Patras is next Igoumenitsa the large ferry port for the lines after Italy. Most see the city only as a transit point to their holiday resorts. But at second glance, Patras has something to offer.
getting there
By plane
By train
The narrow-gauge network of the railway leads in the direction of Corinth-Athens and Pyrgos-Kalamata. To Athens: From the train station (Stathmos Patras) the train bus goes to Kiato. There change to the train to Athens. The Athens train station is next to the Larissis metro station. The city center of Athens can be reached by metro.
By bus
The central one 2 KTEL bus station from Patras is in the city center, Zaimi and Othonos kai Amalias near the train station. Buses to Athens and the rest of the peninsula. Since the construction of the bridge near Rio, also to the north.
In the street
Difficult to reach by land via the Balkans. Better via Italy and then by ferry (see below). "Motorways" lead to Corinth-Athens and south. The mainland to the north is by building the Rio-Andirrio Bridge (chargeable) can now be reached much faster.
By boat
There are various ferry connections from Italy, including of Bari, Brindisi, Ancona (approx. 20 hours) and Venice. You put in new port at. There is a bus connection to the city center, to the bus station, line 118 (1.20 €).
The 3 "Old port" Directly in front of the old town and train station is the landing stage for internal Greek ferries. Levante Ferries serves Sami from here Kefalonia (3 hours) and Pisaethos Íthaca (just under 4 hours).
mobility
Preferably on foot or by bus. The traffic itself has not been as chaotic as it used to be since the opening of the bypass motorway, but it still takes some getting used to for Central Europeans.
The best place to park is in the harbor. It is not a problem to drive into the port area. In the city center, parking incorrectly can result in the number plate being unscrewed by the police (with a corresponding effort to get it back).
The regional train connections were greatly improved in 2020. The S-Bahn line, which now runs every hour between 6.30 a.m. and 11 p.m., is divided in two:
- {under construction: Kato} - 4 Rio (Ρίο) - 5 Ag. Andreas (Αγ. Ανδρέας)
- 6 Kaminia (Καμίνια) - 7 Patras (old port) - Ag. Andreas. On this section there are train buses as a feeder: Patras - Kiato, there train connection to Athens; Kastellokampos - Panepistmiao Uni - Noskomeio Hospital.
Tourist Attractions
In front of the Patras train station there is an old, unfortunately poorly maintained, steam locomotive. The stop itself is curious in that the signs are used goods from the Federal Railroad from thirty years ago.
