San Sebastián is the stronghold of the pinchos (Basque: pintxo). Pincho comes from the Spanish word for “skewer”. It is a snack that is eaten with a drink. It differs from Spanish tapas in that a small wooden or plastic skewer is used to hold the components of the pincho on a slice of bread. Pinchos are usually offered in large quantities on the bar counter. Usually you ask for a plate and then choose the pinchos yourself. The prices are often based on the size or variant of the skewers. Often you just give the waiter the number of skewers or pinchos when paying.
