The slovenian Capital Ljubljana (German: Laibach) is roughly in the middle of the country and is often referred to as a mixture of Austrian and Mediterranean flair.

Tivoli Castle

The river Ljubljanica flows - past baroque buildings - through the middle of the city. The more modern part of the city is on the western side of the Ljubljanica, while the old town with its narrow streets and the castle are on the eastern side. Both parts of the city are connected by a large number of bridges, the largest and most famous of which is the Tromostovje on Prešernov Trg (Prešern Square): three bridges in the same place lead from the main central square towards the old town.

By plane

The is located 25 kilometers from Ljubljana Ljubljana Airport, Letalisce-Brik, the main international airport in the country and the seat of the Slovenian airline Adria Airways (Destinations).

By train

There are two IC / EC and one RailJet connections every day (journey time around 6 ½ hours) from Munich above Salzburg and Villach. There is also a EuroNight to Zagreb at night (around 8 hours).

Ljubljana is also on the routes between Budapest and Trieste as Belgrade and Zurich.

The train station is located on the western edge of the city center, from here most of the accommodations and the city center are within walking distance.

There are some long-distance coaches that run to Ljubljana on a regular basis. The bus station is centrally located in front of the station building.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

The Ljubljana Castle sits enthroned on the Schlossberg above the city and is easy to see from almost everywhere. The castle can be reached either on foot, by car or, depending on the season, by some kind of train. The castle has been renovated in a very modern way, with a lot of iron, steel and glass.

The Tivoli Castle is in the heart of Tivoli Park. It was originally built by the Jesuits at the beginning of the 17th century, then it became the summer residence of the Bishop of Ljubljana, and in the middle of the 19th century the Austrian Field Marshal Radetzky gave the castle its present-day appearance. Today the International Graphics Center is housed in the building.

The dragon bridge
  • The Colonnades were built by Plečnik between 1939 and 1942 for the market behind.

The market on Vodnikov Trg

Fresh fruit and vegetables are available on the market on Vodnikov Trg next to St. Nicholas Cathedral, especially on Saturdays. The fish market is hidden under the colonnade and there is a special area in the building opposite the colonnade. There are vending machines for dairy products and canned goods on the market, which are available 24 hours a day. You can get good ice cream, Slovenian beer and all sorts of other things in a street café on Prešernov Trg. If you cross the Ljubljanica from here and turn right on the other bank, you will pass several bars and street cafes, the most famous of which is the Maček (hangover). If you go further to Zoisova / Karlovška cesta (cesta = street), it is best to turn left twice and then come back to the town hall near Tromostovje / Prešernov trg via Levstikov trg / Stari- and Mestni trg. The tap water is drinkable in Ljubljana. In recent years, numerous drinking fountains have been set up in the city, which are connected to the normal water network.

Practical advice

In Ljubljana, Slovene is mostly spoken on the street, but almost all of the residents speak English. Some Slovenians also speak German, but less in Ljubljana than in Maribor.

Important words such as thank you (hvala), please (prosimo) and good day (dober dan) should be remembered.
