City panorama

Salzburg lies at an altitude of 424 m in the "Salzburg Basin". The city, which today has over 150,000 inhabitants, has been inhabited since the Neolithic and was called Celtic Ivavo. In 45 AD the now Roman settlement Iuvavum received municipal rights. In the 6th century the settlement was carried out by Baiern, in 1077 the fortress Hohensalzburg was built. At the end of the 16th century, under Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, the transformation of the medieval city into the "Rome of the North" began with representative buildings, which were mainly carried out in the Italian Baroque style. Until 1803, Salzburg was the capital of the independent archbishopric under the spiritual and secular leadership of a prince-archbishop. It finally came to Austria in 1816.

The historical center of the city of Salzburg has been part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage

Streets and squares of the old town

Overall, the old town is characterized by the contrast between the narrow streets of the formerly bourgeois Salzburg and the large, wide squares around the cathedral, i.e. the prince-archbishop's center. These places are the Kapitelplatz with the Kapitelschwemme, the Cathedral Square, where traditionally the Anyone is listed, as well as the Residenzplatz with the beautiful Residenzbrunnen. The one is also worth seeing Old market with its closed baroque ensemble. On it are the Floriani Fountain, two traditional cafes (Tomaselli and Fürst), the old prince-archbishop's court pharmacy with historical furnishings and the smallest house in Salzburg, which was built as a construction of a tiny alley. All other squares in the old town are very small. The only exceptions are two heavily traffic-loaded places: the Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz (formerly Sigmundsplatz) with the horse pond and on the right side of the old town the Makartplatz with the state theater and the house of the Mozart family. From Makartplatz you can also get to the famous Mirabell Gardens.

The most famous street in Salzburg is probably the Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace is also located here. Especially this is overcrowded by tourists in summer. Her continuation is that Judengasse. On the right side of the old town forms the Linzergasse with its numerous shops the main axis. From here you can also get to the Sebatiansfriedhof with the grave of the Mozart family and the mausoleum of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich.

Parks

In Hellbrunn Palace Park

Especially the Mirabell Gardens and Hellbrunn Park invite stressed visitors and locals to linger. However, if you want to spend an afternoon in the park, you should rather opt for Hellbrunn Park, despite the greater distance to the city, because larger meadows, where you can picnic undisturbed or read a book, are found in the (visually much more beautiful) Mirabell Gardens vain.

Alternatively, both the Mönchsberg and the Kapuzinerberg serve as oases of calm in the middle of the old town: The best way to conquer the Mönchsberg is via the stairs in the Toscaninihof right next to the festival hall. You can take walks on the mountain to Nonntal (over the fortress mountain) or in the other direction to Mülln and not only get a lot of impressive views of the city and the surrounding area, but also enough benches and meadows for the occasional rest. The Kapuzinerberg can be accessed via a staircase in the Linzergasse, immediately after the first somewhat steep section you get one of the most beautiful views of the baroque ensemble of the city on the left side of the Salzach as a reward as well as a great panorama over the so-called right old town and parts of the more modern Salzburg . • 1  Stiegl brewing world, Bräuhausstrasse 9. Tel.: 43(0)50 1492 1492. Brewery tour including beer tasting, arrival by bus line 1 and 10 from the main station, bus stop at Bräuhausstraße.Open: daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.Price: Adults € 12.50, free with the Salzburg Card.

music

Classical concerts: The best known are probably the Salzburg Festival, which takes place in the summer months and offers a large number of classical concerts, operas and theater productions. The entrance fees are high and the audience is mostly select. However, cards are also offered at affordable prices, but these often sell out quickly and it makes sense to reserve up to a year in advance.

  • Jazz & The City music festival. The festival offers world music and jazz of international greats, as well as promising newcomers, which takes place annually at the end of October / beginning of November in Salzburg's old town with free admission.

Due to the large number of churches in the city of Salzburg, concerts in this context are the order of the day in Salzburg and the offer extends in many directions: Choir, organ, gospel tickets are usually available directly at the entrance.

  • Mirabell Palace Concerts. In the marble hall of Mirabell Palace, where Mozart was already playing.

Modern music: Unfortunately, there are only a few individual events in this sector in Salzburg. A good address here is the “Rockhouse Salzburg” on Schallmooser Hauptstrasse, which can repeatedly invite the greats of the rock scene to come on stage and also has a good feel for interesting bands and future greats of the scene when it comes to new bands.

Some localities:

  • 1  Rockhouse Salzburg, Schallmooser Hauptstraße 46, bus stop Canavalstraße. Live concerts.
  • Jazzit Salzburg, Elisabethstrasse 11. Numerous events and jam sessions.
  • 2  Republic, Anton-Neumayr-Platz 2. Offer: jazz breakfast, concerts.
  • 3  Playhouse, Erzabt-Klotz-Strasse 22. Austria's largest independent theater is located in the Petersbrunnhof.

shop

The old town of Salzburg, especially the Getreidegasse and the Linzergasse, is often advertised as the "most beautiful shopping center in the world" and certainly invites you to stroll and buy, although the variety of offers is certainly not very high. Mainly souvenirs and clothing are offered, occasionally you can find bookshops, grocery stores and individual specialist shops and jewelers. The prices are generally higher than outside the old town.

The largest shopping center that Europark, is located in the district of Taxham, offers a large selection of shops of all kinds (technology, electronics, books, CD and DVD, clothing, groceries, delicatessen) and has been built in connection with a large furniture store. The prices here are customary for the location and without any “tourism surcharge” (can be reached with bus lines 1 and 20 and with the S-Bahn line S 3 from the main station and Mülln).

There are enough grocery stores in the entire city area and also in the surrounding area.

It is advisable to buy tobacco products in tobacconists, as petrol stations, for example, may charge an extra price for their purchase. Cigarettes are cheaper than in Germany, but loose tobacco is more expensive. Bus tickets for city traffic are also available in the tobacco shops, which are cheaper here than at the machine and much cheaper than on the bus itself.

Popular souvenirs are Mozartkugeln, a treat made from pistachio marzipan and nougat. You can find them on almost every street corner. The Original Salzburg Mozart balls have been in the Cafe pastry shop Fürst (see below). They are covered with blue-silver foil. There are numerous imitators who are Real Salzburg Mozartkugel may name, but without the addition original. Many of these balls are wrapped in red and gold foil. In addition to the color, there is also a small but subtle difference in taste and price.

kitchen
