Together with the bridge, they are one of the few examples of National Socialist architectural ensembles in Austria. The buildings were erected in the neoclassical style from 1940 by Roderich Fick. Some of the building material comes from the quarries of the Mauthausen concentration camp, and forced laborers were also used to erect the buildings. The buildings are now used as offices, including the art university.

Streets and squares

  • main square. The main square, newly created in 1230, is dominated by the Trinity Column erected in the 18th century to commemorate the victims of the plague in the center and, with many architectural highlights, forms the entrance to the main road when coming from the Danube. In addition to the Tourist Information There are a number of bars, coffee houses and restaurants around the square. The terraces are particularly inviting in summer. Events take place regularly on the square: from the Christmas market to flea markets to the stage for the actors of the annual street art festival Pflasterspektakel it is the central square in Linz. On New Year's Eve it turns into a large party mile.
  • Parish square. A few steps to the east is the parish church from 1286, which gives the square its name. The parish square, measuring around 70m by 120m, is regularly used for markets. The winter market is particularly worth mentioning here. At the Cafe Meier with its own coffee roastery, it is a real Linz institution. People are intellectually and traditionally aware: cell phones or laptops are undesirable here.
  • Old town. Wonderfully romantic by day with small alleys and lots of historical buildings. Because of the very uneven pavement, it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes. Many small terraces invite you to linger. Small shops from the bookstore to the gallery provide variety. In the evenings and especially on weekends, the old town offers numerous restaurants that are particularly popular with the younger crowd, and there is more than lively activity around various trendy bars until the early hours of the morning.
  • Pigeon market. The pigeon market is probably the liveliest square in town. Not only because it is a transfer point for various trams (which the Linzers lovingly Bim calls) and bus routes is. In addition to the inevitable American fast food chain, which is one of the first in Europe to also offer 100% unmanned, purely electronic ordering, the pigeon market also offers what is probably the best Bosner from Linz. The sausage stand is open late into the night and not only provides night owls with the aforementioned specialty - which has nothing in common with the German currywurst, as is claimed from time to time. A few steps away from the actual square you will find the more upscale shopping pleasure in the Arcades at the Taubenmarkt.
  • Country road. It is one of the most frequented streets in Austria. Part of the country road is a pure pedestrian zone. At the southern end of the approximately 1.5 km long road, it is also accessible by car. It offers various shopping opportunities, lots of gastronomy and architectural impressions from the Middle Ages to modern times. The annual Höhenrausch - a themed adventure trail above the roofs of the city - can be found along the country road.

Parks

"Flow" by Erwin Reiter with a view towards Urfahr
  • Danube Park. One of the most beautiful parks is the Danube Park - better known by that name Danube area or just Lands. It extends from the Nibelungen Bridge downstream to the VÖST Bridge on the Linz side. Since 1997, the area has also been home to Forum Metall - a collection of metal sculptures by well-known artists, which are intended to commemorate the history of Linz as a location for the steel industry. In the warm months, many young people cavort in the upper part of the Danube Park, a colorful hustle and bustle that you should have seen. Young people playing drums and guitars enrich the Danube Park during these months. The illumination of what is in the immediate vicinity Ars Electronica Centers and the art museum Lentos contribute the rest to the flair at night. The country is also the venue for the cultural spectacle every year Linz sound cloud. If you want to stay the night here, you can stay at the ARCOTEL Nike Linz. This can be found along the land Bruckner House, the Ice rink and the public swimming pool Park pool. On the opposite side in Urfahr, at the level of the railway bridge, there is a large skate park, a bicycle traffic park and the continuation of the Danube Cycle Path.
  • Schiller Park. In the city center along the Landstrasse there is the small Schillerpark in front of the Casino. A cross street is followed by the somewhat larger Volksgarten with a very large children's playground.
Entrance to the castle park in Linz (AT)
  • Castle Park. The park behind the Linz Castle is also worth a visit. It not only offers a magnificent overview of the Danube, Urfahr and the Mühlviertel, but also a lot more tranquility than any other park in Linz. When climbing out of the old town, care should be taken to wear good shoes. At the "summit" there is a restaurant with a beautiful sun terrace in the castle. In the park you can always discover quiet and dreamy corners and places. The park is not designed for prams or wheelchairs.

Since the middle of the 18th century, the Pöstlingberg with its 519 m has been the destination of pilgrims. shop

The ticket to the classy shopping world of downtown Linz is the Linz City Voucher, which can be redeemed in around 400 shops. The “currency of the city center” is therefore also an ideal gift that everyone is happy to receive. And one that, thanks to a voucher machine that is unique in Austria, in the Passage Linz shopping center, is also available (almost) around the clock.

Detailed information on www.linzer-city.at.

Most of the shops are on or around the country road. There is pretty much everything there is in a big city. That means, from very cheap to very expensive and everything from books to gold jewelry.

It is best to get off at the “Bürgerstraße” tram stop and walk to the main square. Then you should have seen all the important shops, paying attention to the smaller side streets.

  • In the Urfahr district (just walk from the main square over the Nibelungen Bridge), the main street connects with many other shops. There is also that on the main street Lentia, a modern shopping center including a lot of restaurants.

The opening times throughout Austria differ from those in other European countries. As a rule, the shopping fun ends at 7:00 p.m. at the latest on weekdays. On Saturday usually around 6:00 p.m. This also includes a large part of the retail trade in Linz. Even the shops of a shopping mall like that passage on the country road close punctually at 7:00 p.m. A little tip: The Spar supermarket in the basement of the main train station makes use of its location, is also open on Sundays - albeit with a slightly reduced range - and offers good basic services - not only for travelers.

Some shopping centers outside of Linz also invite you to shop:

  • The biggest is that Plus city in Pasching with a comprehensive mix of branches, a large restaurant area and a huge cinema complex. But be careful, on Fridays and Saturdays sometimes thousands of people push their way through this shopping center at the same time.
  • In Haid on the A1 (Westautobahn) it is Haid Center with large furniture stores (including IKEA), electronics and sports stores.

kitchen

A well-known specialty with coffee is the tasty Linzer Torte. Information about the Linzer Torte including a recipe on the tourism page of City of Linz or in here in the Koch-WikiA restaurant database is located on the website of the Tourism association. It can be filtered according to city districts, company types or opening times.

security

Security is generally very good in Linz - as in all of Austria. Only in the old town, the local district in the city center, do fights and damage to property sometimes take place on weekends due to the high number of alcoholized young people. Attacks on tourists are not known or they are very rare exceptional cases.

Small problem hotspots in the evening are the Schillerpark, Volksgarten and the main train station.

Pickpocketing in busy streets (country roads) or public transport does occur, but hardly more often than in other cities or countries.
